Lesson Topic: Learning about the characteristics of heroes through the lives of Jose Rizal and Andres
Bonifacio as presented in Rene O. Villanueva's “Dalawang Bayani ng Bansa”.
Learners: Grade 3 students
Objective: At the end of the topic, students will be able to write five sentences describing the person in
their lives whom they consider to be their hero.
Materials Needed: pictures of Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, Jose Rizal, and Andres
Bonifacio; cut-outs of symbols (landmarks in the life of Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio); story book
(“Dalawang Bayani ng Bansa” by Rene O. Villanueva); ¼ sheet of paper (to be provided by the
students); blackboard/whiteboard, chalk/whiteboard marker
I. Motivation
(Pre-set: pictures of super heroes pasted on the board.) Students will be asked who their favorite
hero is (whether super or human). After each student recites, they will be asked to write on the board
their favorite characteristic of that hero. The teacher will have already written on the board the word
“hero” and arrows pointing outward from that word. Students will write their answers at the end of
each arrow.
II. Objectives
To be able to compare and contrast the lives of Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio
To be able to describe the characteristics of a hero
To be able to realize that everyday people can be heroes too
To be able to express how everyday people can be heroes
III. Pre-requisite
Unlocking of difficult words (vocabulary).
The teacher will go back to the pictures of the super heroes, but this time add two more pictures
– Jose Rizal's and Andres Bonifacio's. Students will be asked what the common thing about them is.
When the students have deduced the answer “They are all heroes,” the teacher will proceed to
storytelling.

2. IV. Information and Examples
The teacher will tell the students the story of “Dalawang Bayani ng Bansa.” As the story is told,
the teacher will stick cut-outs symbolizing each landmark in the life of both heroes. The cut-outs will
be placed under the picture of the corresponding hero.
V. Practice and Feedback
The teacher will ask the students what they think about the story and what their initial reactions
were.
The teacher will then draw a Venn diagram on the board. One circle will be labeled Jose Rizal,
while the other Andres Bonifacio. The class will compare and contrast the lives of the two heroes. The
class will then proceed to comparing and contrasting the characteristics of the two heroes.
The teacher will draw a big circle on the board. On top will be the word Me, while at the bottom
will be the word Me. The class will share what they think are their characteristics that make them
heroic. This part of the discussion will lead to the students realizing that they can also be everyday
heroes.
VI. Evaluation, Application and Summary
Students will be asked to write on a piece of paper five sentences describing the person whom
they consider to be the hero in their life. It could be their brother, sister, mother, father, relative, friend,
even pet.
