Introduction
In this lesson, young learners will be introduced with a board game as a stirrer
since they normally come back from lunch in a sleepy mood. The lesson has as
main aim revising prior knowledge as well as integrating the new one. They will be
working in 2 groups as to encourage collaboration, team work, the combination of
different roles and aptitudes, integration, cooperation and friendly competition. This
activity not only involves visual and auditory response on the part of the students
but also total physical response and speech production. Afterwards, they will work
on an activity from the booklet related to the parts of the house as a settler and to
finish the lesson.
Procedure
Introducing the board game ● The whole class will be divided in
2 groups.
● We will give each group a
headband with a different colour
to differentiate each member of
the group.
Explaining and playing the game
(25 to 30 minutes)
● Each group will have a name
which is going to be selected by
the members of each group and
which will represent them.
● One member of each group rolls
the dice, and the highest number
determines who plays first.
● The game board pattern is a
spiral of 46 fields, from the
outside to the inside. Most of the
fields have questions and
commands related to the topics
(parts of the body, school objects,
members of the family, parts of
the house, numbers, colours).
There are some special hazards
or benefits for players who land
on some specific fields.
● The object of the game is to
travel along the spiral from field 1
to field 46, and the first group
“Parts of the house” activity from the
booklet
(10 minutes)
who successfully lands exactly on
field 46 is the winner.
● On each turn, a member of the
group rolls the dice and advances
the counter along the spiral by as
many fields as the sum of the
dice. The group must deal with
any situation on the space landed
on, be they hazards or benefits.
With this activity students are expected
to: first, label a drawing of a house,
saying for example: “this is the garage”.
And finally, they have a series of
statements to complete having in mind
the picture, for example: The sofa is in
the...
