2. Name That Capital

Objectives
•Students will practice athletic skills.
•Students will test their knowledge of place names.
Materials
•Set of letter flash cards for each group A-Z, with double letters for each vowel
and S, T, R, L, H, N
•2 cone markers for each group
Procedures
Since the students are just beginning to learn the material to be used, post a
chart with capitals, states, and countries on a wall. Let them know that they may
send one student from their group to the chart to check answers.
1.Have students get into equal groups.
2. Each group should have a complete set of flashcards with states capitals, the
flashcards will be at the other end of the court.
3.To begin, give the students a movement challenge; e.g., all jump rope ten times,
do a lap, or chest pass to all teammates before question can be answered.
4.After giving them the movement challenge ask them a question, for example,
what is the capital of Nevada, name a capital that has 6 letters.
5.On the "go" signal, students complete the movement task, then work together
to determine how to what capital is the answer, once they pick an answer one
student must run across the gym, find the flashcard and post it on wall.
6.Every group with the correct answer gets one point.
3. Modifications:Give such tasks as:
•Capitals with six letters in their names (Denver, St. Paul, Pierre, Helena)
•Complete a sentence: The capital of Washington is? (Olympia)Closure:
After the class has all participated, sit them all down and recap what they just
did……
-Make sure they can explain how they identified different states, and grouped
them in different categories. -Ask to see if the students understand why we did
this activity.
