LESSON 1 -ED ENDINGS
. Today we are learning to pronounce.
–ed endings
We learning this because it is a common mistake
which is made when learning to speak English.
OBJECTIVES:
1. When and why we use –ed
2. The rules for pronouncing –ed
endings
LEARNING OBJECTIVE 1
WHEN AND WHY DO WE USE –ED ENDINGS
When and why?
Use –ed to make the past tense of regular verbs.
Want- Wanted e.g. I wanted to go to the cinema but it
was too late.
Ask – Asked e.g. I asked my friend for some money.
Stay- Stayed e.g. I stayed at home yesterday.
SPELLING RULES
 Remember if the verb ends in ‘y’ you need to take
out the ‘y’ and add ‘ied’ in its place for example:
Hurry – Hurried
Fry- Fried
If a verb ends with ‘e’ add ‘d’ for example:
Demonstrate- Demonstrated
CAN YOU COME UP WITH THE PAST TENSE OF
THESE WORDS
 Walk
 Smile
 Demonstrate
What about Hurry? How would you spell the past
tense?
 Walk – Walked
 Smile – Smiled
 Demonstrate- Demonstrated
 Hurry- Hurried

There are three ways to pronounce –ed.
/t/ /id/ /d/
Ask /k/ Need /d/ Stayed
Assess /s/ Wait /t/
Watch /tʃ/
Wished /ʃ/
Summary:
1. When and why we use –ed:
Use –ed to make the past tense of regular verbs e.g. I washed my
clothes yesterday.
Remember the spelling- E.g. Hurry- Hurried, Smile- Smiled.
2. The rules for pronouncing –ed endings e.g.
Wash, Watch, Assess, Wish, Ask, - /t/
Need, Wait - /id/
Stay - /d/
Remember never pronounce –ed!
