Past
Simple
Power Up 4
Unit 2
When do we use past
simple?
We use past simple:
1. To talk about an action which
both started and finished in a
specific time in the past.
Ex: I watched a film yesterday.
2. For repeated or habitual actions in
the past.
Ex: He studied a lot when he was
younger.
3. For a series of actions that happened
in the past.
Ex: I finished my work, walkedto the
beach, and found a nice place to swim.
VERB CLASSIFICATION
The verbs are divided into two
groups in English:
Regular Verbs
We add –ed to the end of
the regular verbs.
Laugh + ed = Laughed
 Smile + ed = Smiled
 Play + ed = Played
HOW TO ADD
–ED TO THE
END OF THE
VERBS?
The letters are divided into 2
groups in English:
We memorize the vowel
letters this way:
O for the face
A for the eyes
I for the nose
U for the mouth
E for the ears
Rules for adding -ed
Spelling rules Examples
Ending in e
Add d
Live – Lived
Stare - Stared
Ending in vowel + y
Add ed
Stay – Stayed
Play - Played
Ending in consonant + y
Change y to i and add ed
Try – Tried
Dry - Dried
Ending in a vowel +
consonant
Double the last letter + ed
Stop – Stopped
Plan - Planned
Regular verbs examples
Ask……Asked Work…….Worked
Arrive…..Arrived Call………Called
Study……Studied Shop....Shopped
Paint…….Painted Want……Wanted
Dress……Dressed Wait…….Waited
Irregular Verbs
We can’t add –ed to the irregular verbs, each
irregular verb has a random form which is
different from the others and we need to
memorize them.
Ex: Eat……….. Ate Be.…..was/were
Come………Came See…………Saw
Go…………..Went have/has…..Had
Sleep……….Slept Make……….Made
Do/does……..Did Can………..could
Know……….Knew
We also have some irregular past
verbs that don’t change their forms
and stay the same:
Cut………..Cut
Hurt……….Hurt
Let…………Let
Hit…………Hit
Put…………Put
Look at the irregular
verbs on page 127 in
the pupil’s book and
memorize the base form
and past simple form of
each verb which means
the first two columns.
Positive
Sentences
I
stayed on the beach.
broke the tent.
You
He/She/It
We
They
Negative sentences
We use (did not = didn’t) to make a
past simple sentence negative.
I
didn’t stay on the beach
break the tent
You
He/She/It
We
They
Asking Questions
We ask questions about past by using did
in the question.
What
did
I
You
She/H
e/It
We
They
Eat?
Note:
“Did and didn’t” are both past
simple verbs themselves and
they give the past meaning to
the sentences they are in, so
whenever we have did or didn’t
in the sentence we don’t change
the verbs that come after them
to past form.
Correct: I didn’t go to school yesterday.
Wrong: I didn’t went to school
yesterday.
Correct: She didn’t walk.
Wrong: She didn’t walked.
Correct: We didn’t play.
Wrong: We didn’t played.
Correct: Did they eat?
Wrong: Did they ate?
Past simple time expressions
I ate a sandwich yesterday.
You found the bag in the garden this
morning.
I made my mom a cake last night.
She left hospital two days ago.
We visited Dubai last summer.
They painted the wall five years
