Lava con2015 - The Emerging Model for Content Creation: Guided + Fluid Author...Stilo International
DITA implementations in large organizations have typically been confined to the domain of tech docs. Unfortunately there are several barriers to the more widespread adoption of DITA, including the cost and availability of appropriate authoring tools. SMEs who make occasional content contributions don’t want to know about DITA or its complexities, or invest a lot of time and effort learning new tools.
Up until now, there has traditionally been four classic models of content authoring: free-form, form-driven, structure-driven and template-driven. All have their relative merits, but still fall short of what is required for widespread enterprise DITA adoption.
In this session, you will learn about an emerging 5th model for content creation – guided + fluid DITA authoring. We will demonstrate how AuthorBridge, a new web-based editor, can provide the best of all four classic models and more, while providing a paradigm shift in the affordability of structured content authoring.
Controlling the Complexity of Content LifecyclesZia Consulting
With the volumes of content your organization produces, are you looking to simplify the way information can be updated, translated, or reused? Structured authoring and component content management (CCM) have become indispensable tools of the trade. This presentation will address how these tools can work for you, from making revisions easier to update across an entire library of documents (PDF, HTML, eBook, etc.) to reducing the costs associated with translation to multiple languages (Spanish, Chinese, etc.). The technology we cover in this webinar will include oXygen, Componize, and Alfresco—and how Zia implements it all. We’ll share use cases including the management of content that’s shared in multiple formats and languages, and assembling content when the distributed information originates from multiple sources.
—Structured authoring and component content management (CCM)
—Why organizations leverage XML and DITA
—The cost savings that result from the efficiencies of these technologies

LavaCon 2017 - DITA: Start Small, Grow Big Using Open Source ToolsJack Molisani
You’re considering using DITA and would like to try it out without incurring significant upfront costs, but also keeping your options open longer-term. Where do you start? How will you approach the challenges of content creation, content management, and publishing your content? There are in fact plenty of options. The good news is that XML and DITA are open standards. This has led to a healthy ecosystem with quality commercial and inter-operable open source tools, that do away with vendor lock-in and keep operating costs down. We will discuss the three challenges, show an example of how end-to-end solutions can be built based upon Git and other open source tools. In fact, the result may be better than you’d expect.
This session was presented by Amit Siddhartha at the DITA-XML Workshop held on Saturday, 5 May 2018 at Pune. During this session Amit explained "What's ahead after learning DITA" and he shared his inputs on how DITA based authoring can be a boon for Machine Learning and Deep Learning. He also shared his input on how learning other aspects of DITA-XML such as CSS, HTML, XSLT, EDD can help any one develop a new career path.
Nordic APIs 2016 Platform Summit - Setting your path for digital transformationArthur Eyckerman
In order to stay competitive in your area, whether it’s Finance/Retail/Manufacturing/Transport/Healthcare or any other vertical, you’ll have to open up access to data in order to enable your digital business. In the disruptive digital economy, companies driven by algorithms are delivering services without even owning the physical assets your business used to be built on. New business models need to align with the fast changing world in which everything is interconnected. API’s are the standard and they need to evolve from an IT technology into a business transformation enabler.

Building An XML Publishing System With DITAScott Abel
Presented at DocTrain East 2007 Conference by Brian Buehling, Dakota Systems -- Since its inception, DITA has rapidly gained acceptance as a standard document structure used in many XML-based content management and publishing systems. DITA is an XML schema developed primarily to support technical documentation for a wide array of applications. This session will cover the commonly used element, attribute and entity constructs that are defined in the schema. More importantly, recommendations concerning how best to implement DITA solutions will be given. Special attention is given to developing practical DITA applications since, in many cases, some DITA elements will have to be extended through a mechanism called specialization to produce a robust XML-based publishing system.
JVMCON Java in the 21st Century: are you thinking far enough ahead?Steve Poole
Discussions abound about the ‘future of Java’ though most of them are actually focused on the here and now. What are the consequences of Java 9 modularity, of moving JEE to Eclipse, of running your application in the cloud? All questions that are important now. but what are the important questions for tomorrow?
In this talk learn about a different view on the real future of Java. See how new hardware technologies, new software approaches and new ideas are powering Java towards a life far removed from that envisioned at its inception. It’s time to look up and see how you will need to change how you think: Whether it's driven by AI or Quantum Computers the problems of tomorrow demand new approaches and new thinking. Are you ready?
n detail the talk will show examples from simple procedural thinking , through lambdas to neural networks etc up to quantum computing. The talk will cover how the JVM is being extended to embrace new forms of hardware - from GPU's and FPGAs and large compute clusters through organic processors and (eventually) QC's.
This talk will explain the journey that Java is on and how its ultimate end point is perhaps not what you'd expect.

Negotiation skills the missing ingredient to career success psstcJack Molisani
Technical Writing has always been a field in which we plan for output channels that don’t even exist yet, but it seems like authoring tools and technology are evolving faster the than technology we are writing about.
In this session I’m not going to talk about the latest tools and technology you need to learn to stay competitive. Instead, I’ll share what I see is holding most content professional back from quantum leaps in career development: soft skills like conflict resolution, workplace negotiation skills, and more.
Honing your workplace negotiating skills Jack Molisani
We all find ourselves negotiating for what we want, whether we're trying to manage the scope of a project, negotiate a job offer, or ask for a raise.
During this workshop you will practice how to successfully navigate a negotiation, including:
How to prepare for a pending negotiation
How to set the stage for success
How to get what you really want
When to cut your losses and start over elsewhere
Jack will draw on experience as both a buyer and seller of corporate services, and will share war stories from both sides of the negotiation table in this hands-on segment on how to hone your workplace negotiation skills.
This final workshop of the day will give you the tools to get what you want, not what you are offered.
“You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate!”

Career advancement through personal brandingJack Molisani
I recently went to a conference where attendees' name tags included the phrase, “Ask me about… [then the answer attendees provided when registering].” While the intent was to give attendees a way to break the ice when networking, I realized the whole concept of personal branding could be summarized by that simple statement, 'Ask me about…'
How is technical communication viewed in your organization? Does your boss's boss think of your department as a core part of the development team, or a burdensome commodity to be acquired at the lowest possible price given an acceptable level of quality?
What are you doing to promote your corporate value and advance your career?
What should people ask you about…?
How to ace an interview using a portfolio Jack Molisani
Have you ever interviewed for a position you wanted, but didn't get? Chances are you didn't achieve the four critical steps needed to receive a job offer. In this session, bestselling author and professional recruiter shows how a portfolio is not just a collection of writing samples--it is a tool you can use to control an interview and achieve specific objectives that result in a job offer. The segment includes what to put in a portfolio, how to get things to put in your portfolio, and most importantly, how to use your portfolio to ace a job interview.

Let’s Work Together: How SASB Implemented DITA and Changed their Corporate Cu...Jack Molisani
The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board™
(SASB™) develops and disseminates industryspecific
sustainability accounting standards that
help public corporations disclose material,
decision-useful information to investors. Because
the Standards team needed to capture their
research, track how it drove the standards, and
publish the standards via multiple channels,
SASB implemented DITA with a CMS.
Jessi Lawrence and Amber Swope worked with
the SASB organization to change the culture
from addressing individual team's pain points to
collaboratively designing the right solution for
everyone. They leveraged their agile development
approach with the content and tool
development, and developed tools and processes
that organically adapt to the Standards team's
existing daily workflow but still solve the larger
problem of disconnected processes. Not only did
the project change how the content creators and
publishers work, it changed their relationship
with the IT team, which moved from being a
support organization to truly being a service
organization.
In this session, you will learn how implementing
DITA is more than an opportunity to address
technical and business requirements. It's your
chance to break down barriers between teams
and work together. Jessi and Amber describe
how implementing DITA with a CMS not only
changed how the content creators and
publishers work, but also changed their
relationship with the IT team, which moved from
being a support organization to truly being a
service organization.
