Background Information
This is a long-lasting infection that is caused by
bacteria.
This was once a very feared disease as it was highly
contagious and devastating disease.
Nowadays, it is very rare to get leprosy and is easily
treated.
Early diagnosing of the disease and treatment
prevents the possibility of obtaining a disability.
Transmission
It is spread around by an
infected person sneezing or
coughing. A person who
breathes in droplets or
secretions can get the
infection.
Signs & Symptoms
Skin lesions that may be faded/discolored
Growths on the skin
Thick, stiff or dry skin
Severe pain
Numbness on affected areas of the skin
Muscle weakness or paralysis (especially in the hands
and feet)
Eye problems that may lead to blindness
Enlarged nerves (especially those around the elbow and
knee)
A stuffy nose
Nosebleeds
Ulcers on the soles of feet
Treatment
Hansen’s Disease is easily
treated thanks to today’s
medical advancement.
The treatment may last from 6
months to 2 years.
You will be given a
combination of special
antibiotics.
