The practice of pharmacy in India has a long history dating back to ancient texts like the Rig Veda. Formal pharmacy education developed in India in the 19th century with the establishment of medical colleges in Chennai and Kolkata.

Defination of Pharmacy:-
Pharmacy Greek word of Pharmacy is called (PHARMAKON) Pharmakon means drug
or medicine.
Pharmacy is defined as the profession which is concerned with the art and science of
Identification, Selection, Preparation, Preservation & Standardization of suitable
drug.
Therefore, a pharmacist is a “medicine or drug man”.

History of profession of Pharmacy in India in Relation to Pharmacy Education:-
A Number of Degree programs like Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharm), Bachelor of Pharmacy
(B. Pharm.),Master in Pharmacy (M.pharm), Master of science in Pharmacy [MS(Pharm)],
Master of Technology in Pharmacy [MTech(Pharm)], Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D), and
Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy (PhD)are being offered in india.

Lord Dhanwantri with Amrit (nectar) in his hand is worshipped as “God of Health” .
Varieties of Herbs which are used is in the treatment of various disease are described in Rig
Veda.
The message of Ayurveda was spread in India By CHARKA and SUSHRATA.
Pre- Historic Period:-
The concept of Hospital was developed and practiced in India (BC226) during the period of
Great Ashoka.
AD PERIOD
1)- Hospital activity in India involved in treating diseases like piles,jaundice,TB, etc. It was
discovered in TamilNadu in 900AD
2)- The pattern of Charaka for treating diseases was followed by all the medical works in
1000AD
3)- In 1500 century, Indian drugs and herbs influenced Europe.
4)- In 1562, an article “ Cologuious dos stroples a drogus da indica” describing various
herbs, was published by Garcia d aorta, a Protugues-cum-teacher.
5)- In 1664, the first general hospital was established in Chennai.
6)- Chennai Medical College (Chennai) and Calcutta Medical College (Kolkata)were started
in 1835 and 1936 respectively.
