Pre- Independence Period:-
The Allopathic/western system of medicine came in India along with the British traders who become
the rulers,thus, this system got benefraction.
Under the British Rule , Allopathic system was meant for the ruling race only, but later in the 19th
century it became popular among the other people.
Some of the historical points related to Pharmacy education in India are:
1)- London Pharmacopoeia became available in India in 1824 in the form of Hindustani Version. This version
described the control procedure of the pharmaceutical activities in India. As a result,the Indian community
was forced to import drugs from overseas and Indian pharmacy was pushed to an under-developed stage.
2)- The Goa Medical Collage was started in 1840 at Panjim, Goa.
3)- In 1841, WBO Shaugh Neesy (an Editior Prof.) published Bengal Dispensary and Pharmacopoeia-Volume 1
in Calcutta.
4)- In 1843, the Devanagri transcription of London Pharmacopoeia in Hindi and Bengali was made available in
India.
5)- In 1864, Bengal Pharmacopoeia and General Conspectus of Medicinal Plants (commonly known as Bengal
Pharmacopoeia) were published.
6)- For the publication of Indian Pharmacopoeia -4th march ,1864,E.J Wang tabled the motion.
7)- In 1868, First Pharmacopoeia of India was published in India under the British Monarchy.
8)- In 1869, the “Vernacular Names of Indian Medicinal Plants and Herbs” were compiled by a pharmacist in
Chennai College and Hospital, Moder Sheriff. Later on, the “ Vernacular Names of Indian Medicinal Plants and
Herbs” became the nucleus for “Indian Pharmacopoeia”.
9)- In 1874, regular two years course for “Chemists and Druggists Diploma” was started at MMC.

10)- In 1932, the Vice Chancellor of BHU , Late Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya included pharmaceutical chemistry
as a subject course at Banaras Hindu University(BHU).
11)- In November 1935, the first pharmaceutical society with an education platform was developed under the
banner of BHU.
12)- During the 1937-38 session , Prof. M.L. Shroff ( Father of Pharmacy) started the regular degree cource of
B.Pharm at BHU.
13)- In 1939, the first issue of Indian Journal of Pharmacy was published.
14)- The first pharmacy graduate in india was Shubadhra kumar Patni in 1940.
15)- In 1943,Gorakh Prasad Srivastava became the first Post Graduation in Pharmacy in India from BHU.
Post- Independence Era:-
Some of the historical points related to pharmacy education in India are:
1)- In 1949,Diploma in Pharmacy was started in an institute at Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.
2)- In 1953, the Education Regulation of PCI stated Diploma of Pharmacy(D.Pharm)as the minimum
qualification to enter into the Pharmacy Proffesion.
3)- In 1949, the Pharmacy Council Of India was established.
4)- In 1953, Sheovihari LAl was the first PhD holder in Pharmacy who obtained his Doctorate degree under
the guidance of Dr.Achari.
5)- The first edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published in 1955.
6)- In 1960, AICTE gave the syllabus of Master of Pharmacy.
7)- In 1966, the second edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
8)-In 1978, Nayudamma Committee directed GATE examination for M.pharm course with scholarship.
9)- In 1985, the third edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published. 10)-In 1991, the National Institute of
Pharmaceutical Educatiom And Research (NIPER) WAS established at Mohali with Dr. C.L.Kaul as the first
Director.
11)- In 1996, the fourth edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
12)- In 2007, the fifth edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
13)- On 10th May,2008, the Pharm.D regulation of the Pharmacy Act,1948 were notified in the Indian gazette
with the objective to train the future pharmacists.
