Introduction

Hematology
Hematology (Haematology) is the science
that deals with the different components of
blood and their disorders.
Blood
Blood is the red fluid that runs in blood vessels.
• Normal adult body contains 4-6 liters of blood
(Av. 5 L)
• Bright red in arteries
(Oxygenated)
• Dark red in veins
(Deoxygenated)
Physical Characters of Blood
Composition of Blood
• Plasma: ~55%
• Red Blood Cells
(RBC, Erythrocytes):~45%
• White Blood Cells
(WBC, Leukocytes)+
• Platelets
(Thrombocytes):~1%
Composition of Blood
Plasma
Blood Cells
Compose 45% of blood (hematocrit (Hct.))
– Erythrocytes (RBCs)
– Leukocytes (WBCs):
• Neutrophils
• Basophils
• Eosinophils
• Monocytes
• Lymphocytes
– Thrombocytes (Platelets)
RED BLOOD CELLS
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
Most numerous blood cells
• Count: 4-6 millions cells/µL
• Shape :Biconcave in shape
• Life span: ~120 days
• No nucleus
• Contain hemoglobin
• Function :
Transport O2 and CO2
to and from tissues
White Blood Cells(Leukocytes)
• Count: 4,000 – 11,000 cells/µL
• Life span differ between different types of
WBCs, however, it ranges from hours to months.
• Function in protecting the body against
foreign substances and pathogens such as
bacteria, viruses, etc.
White Blood Cells(Leukocytes)
• Granulocytes
– Neutrophils
– Eosinophils
– Basophils
• Agranulocytes
– Monocytes
– Lymphocytes:
• T-lymphocytes
• B-lymphocytes
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
Are Fragments of cells
• Derived
from Megakaryocyte cells in
bone marrow
• Count: 150,000 – 400,000/µL
• Life span: 5-9 days
• Function:
clot (platelet plug)
formation to stop
bleeding
Thank you
