Editor's Notes
I wanted to put a plug for the event app. While you are waiting, you can use the discussion feature to let us and the others in the room know what ideas you have about eLearning, ask the group questions, and interact with each other as we progress through this session and maybe connect with others at the end. Remember to evaluate the session and rate it.
Good afternoon. Let’s get started.
My name is Kimberly Kouame, I am the Manager of Learning Resources on the Learning and Development team at Rotary headquarters. My team works on publications, like Lead Your Club and Lead Your District series, we write Leader’s Guides for PETS and District Training Assembly, and we manage online learning including webinars and the learning center. I’m so excited to be here today to share ideas about online learning for Rotary. As we go through the presentation, I’d love to hear your thoughts and continue the conversation in the app under the discussion section for this session.
Let’s review the agenda before we get started.
I’ll give an overview of Rotary’s online learning strategies. Then I’ll give an overview of the Rotarian eLearning Partner program before we hear from some of our the Rotarians who have been working with us to post content on the Learning Center.
At the end we will have some time for Q&A.
Show of hands: HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TO ROTARY’S LEARNING CENTER?
In order to set up this discussion I’d like to define what we mean by e-learning at Rotary.
E-learning is learning utilizing electronic technologies to access content when you want and where you want. It can be completed at your own pace, on demand. The benefits include saving travel time and costs, easily searchable content that is organized and easy to find.
The technology we are using is our Learning Center, which is a Learning Management System. Learning Management Systems not only help to organize content, make it available on demand, and provide the learner information on their progress, but it also helps the trainer track who took their course and to get feedback as to how the content is being consumed.
In addition to the platform, we are starting to look at adjusting the way we deliver content. For example we are creating more videos, interactive learning scenarios, quizzes, and chunking content in smaller more digestible pieces organized in a more logical manner that is easy to sort and filter without being overwhelming.
In 2012, we launched our first Learning Center. Over the past six years, we’ve learned a lot. The data shows us which courses are the most popular, which materials members are consuming, and over time we have adjusted our offerings based on usage.
Show of hands, how many of you have heard that we are launching a new Learning Center?
We have been working on this project for the past year now and we will be ready to launch this summer.
Before I say too much more, I’m going to share this short video to give you a sneak preview.

Kim:
There are several key features:
More content is smaller more digestible pieces.
The ability to post content in more languages than our web site supports.
Increased search functionality with the ability to not only search for courses but also content and documents.
The ability to earn certificates, certifications, and badges to encourage you to keep learning more.
So we as staff create the majority of the content on the Learning Center, but we also allow zone and district leaders to create content for clubs, upload it to our system, and track the reports for the courses they have created.
Content can be visible to members of one or more districts or to groups by language. This is where our partner program comes in. We currently have 4 groups posting content and many more interested.
With the launch of our new Learning Center, we have started to formalize the program a little more because interest in this program is growing. In our current Learning Center, we have 4 groups of Rotarians creating content. When we launch, we will have trained 12 groups of Rotarians to create content. I’ll let them tell you part of their stories about the process working with my team in hopes that you get some good ideas from them.
Let me introduce my panel.
First I have Kevin Eisenberg who is a PDG from D5130 and current Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator Zone 25 and a District Trainer. He is going to tell us about the zone level course he worked on.
Wendy is from the Rotary Club of X in Great Britain and Ireland. Wendy works with a team of Rotarians to create regional content for Rotary Great Britain and Ireland. Wendy’s group was the original group we piloted this program with. Wendy has been partnering with us since 2014 and currently she has five courses on our Learning Center.
So first I’m going to turn it over to Kevin to tell us how his team developed online content.
Kevin:
I’m going to focus on our Zone level course (which is also Grant Management Training) and what we set out to accomplish.
●Customizable by Individual Districts●Content in 20 min segments●Increased inspiration●More effective delivery (which means Greater absorption of knowledge)●Reaching broader audience●Enhanced member satisfaction
Kevin:
For the e-Learning teams…we are just beginning. No one is yet trained on Docebo, but we did use a team approach to develop the course…not some much exact content as that is established by TRF but our process to analyze the need, identify the issues, understand what else was available, etc.
Team Approach
Analyzed the need
Identified the challenges
Created an outline for defined audiences
Developed content in pairs
Reviewed by full team
Mention a couple of tips.
Wendy: Since 2014 Rotary in Great Britain & Ireland (which comprises 25 districts) has been partnering with RI to develop online courses. These courses are :
Introduction to the role of Assistant Governor. This course is mainly aimed at first year AGs and should be completed before the Annual Leadership Training Event in Great Britain and Ireland.
Managing Effective Meetings
Our Rotary in Great Britain & Ireland Membership Team have developed three courses – New Club Formation, Satellite Clubs and Mentoring in Clubs.
We have a small team of developers at any one time who work with our topic experts – at the moment this is members of our Learning, Development & Training Committee and Membership, Development & Retention Teams.
Wendy: We have a development process from idea to publication that includes standardization and testing along the way. We also evaluate all our courses. Up to now they have all been well received not only in Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland but around the world.
Before 2014 we used Moodle as our Learning Management System,. We learnt a lot from this. Tips :
Put in place protocols before you begin
Agree layout, fonts etc
Agree course development process
Test, test and test
Evaluate the courses straight away and as an ongoing process
Review annually
We are currently looking at how we can use the new LMS which is different to the previous one. Our courses are in depth and engage interactively with the leaner. The new LMS seems to be more focused on short basic courses. Change happens! This may need us to change the structure of our courses so for us there will be a time delay before we begin adding courses to the new LMS.
Why would you want to be an eLearning partner?
Kim
Kim
Get your district leaders behind this idea, it should be a collaborative effort.
Think about your goals and objectives for creating eLearning. Review courses on the current Learning Center to get ideas.
Every group has a leader. Identify 3-5 people in your district to be involved in this project that will be trained on how to upload content and how to view reports. You may have others on your teams doing other tasks, but we only want to know who should have additional access in the Learning Center and who needs to be trained. We can’t give everyone access, and train everyone but we can train a small group and you can be the liaison for your district.
We have a few minutes for questions.
