Modern church governance is often vested in a sole authority known as the pastor. The pastoral ministry has replaced the Five Fold Ministry of Ephesians 4 and the role of collegial elders as a governing body that was the established Biblical model. This results in ethical dilemmas for the church, including preacher religion, abuses of authority, and a distortion of the true meaning of "ministry".

In Heb 8:3-5:
3) Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4) If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already men who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5) They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: "See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain."

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Leadership Evaluation by Bro. Monday Umoh
1. CHURCH OF CHRIST,
SANGOTEDO
THEME: SUSTAINING THE CHURCH
LEADERSHIP
TOPIC: LEADERSHIP EVALUATION
A Teaching Presented by
Bro. Monday Umoh
26th March 2017
2. CONTENTS
Introduction / Definitions
Who Should we Evaluate?
What Are We To Evaluate of?
Why Do We Need to Evaluate?
How Should We Evaluate
3. Introduction
In the last two or more months we have been on a study
series aimed at sustaining or strengthening the Church
leadership
Today’s teaching continues in that drive as we discuss about
leadership evaluation
Evaluation is an act or instance of evaluating or appraising
To determine or set the value or amount of; to appraise
To determine the significance, worth or quality of; assess
Leadership –position or function of a leader – one who
guides, directs or able to lead
Leadership evaluation may simply be referred to as act of
determining the significance, worth or quality of one who is
leading or seeking to lead
4. Who Should We Evaluate?
Clearly the context of our discussion is about Church Leadership
But as Christians we all open to evaluation –either by ourselves or
be evaluated
Philippians 3:12-15 – Paul’s self evaluation
Acts 16:1-3 – Timothy being evaluated by Paul
Acts 6: 1-7 – Christians were evaluated and appointed to
serve the needy
Acts 14:23 – Christians were appointed to as Elders being
found fit to shepherd
It is required that Stewards or leaders be found faithful –I
Corinthians 4:1,2
The bible gives us insight on who are in the position of leadership
in the Church
Acts 14:23; 11:30; 15:2,4,6; 16:4; 20:17; 21:18; I Timothy 5:17;
Titus 1:5; James 5:14; II John 1; III John 1; I Timothy 3:1, 8,12;
Acts 20:28
5. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -1
If we agree that the leaders in the Church should be
evaluated
What should they be evaluated of ?– The Bible provides the
outlines in a number of scriptures – key among them are:
1. 1Timothy 3:1-13;
2. Titus 1:5-9
Their fitness to serve in capacity as a leader can be
categorised into:
General terms
God and His word
Self
His Family
Others
Attitude to Things
6. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -2
General Terms
A man above reproach (I Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:7)
That does not mean a perfect man (Philippians
3:10-14; Psalms 143:2)
But one with conduct befitting of a mature believer;
one that no one can legitimately accuse of his
conduct
7. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -2
• To God and His Word
Not a new convert (or novice) – 1
Timothy 3:6
Devout – Titus 1:8 – demonstrate a
definite commitment to God
Holds fast the faithful word, able to
exhort and refute – I Tim 3:2; Titus
1:9
8. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -3
Self
Aspires (strong desire) to serve – I Timothy
3:1
Not under compulsion or constrained by necessity to
serve –I Peter 5:2
Temperate, reacts according to biblical principles,
Spirit-controlled –I Tim 3:2
Not quick Tempered, no short fuse, controls – Titus
1:7
9. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -3
• Family
Husband of one wife (totally devoted – no
distractions) – I Tim 3:2; Titus 1:6
Manages well his household, Has executive
abilities – I Tim 3:4,5; Titus 1:6
10. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -4
Others
Hospitable – lover of strangers - - I Tim 3:2;
Titus 1:8
Able to Teach and disproof wrong teachings - I
Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:9
Not Self-willed – Titus 1:7
Loves What is good – Titus 1:8; Ps 15
Not violent or a Striker - I Timothy
3:3; Titus 1:7
11. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -4
Not quarrelsome or contentious – I Tim
3:3
Gentle (puts strength under control),
gracious – I Tim 3:3
Just – makes wise, fair or honest decisions
towards others -Titus 1:8
Respectable, orderly, balanced – Tim 3:2
Good reputation outside – I Tim 3:7
12. What Should Leaders be
Evaluated of? -5
Others Things
Free from the love of money - I Timothy 3:3; Titus 1:7
Not drunkard or addicted to wine. Must be free from any
kind of addiction - I Timothy 3:3; Titus 1:7
As it is demanded of every Christian: his lifestyle should
not cause the weak Christians to stumble -Rom 14:13-21
13. Why Should Leaders be
Evaluated?
In consideration of the qualifications
outlined in preceding slides, one can
deduce two primary importance for
evaluating Church leadership
1. To Pre-qualify ones fitness in the leadership
role before appointing to serve e.g.
Marks of moral qualities – high moral character
Marks of leadership – capacity to lead others in
Christian life and not for “BOY” (Boss Over You)
Marks of spiritual maturity –grown in Christ, life-
changing experience, not a novice
Marks of identification and confirmation -identify
exemplary qualities character to follow
14. Why Should Leaders be
Evaluated?
2. Feedback and Need for continuous
improvement – performance while in office:
Feedback is an important element/process in
leadership success – Philippians 3:12-15
To identify areas where improvements are
needed and not areas for “PHD” (Pull Him
Down) – I Timothy 1:5;
15. HOW Should We Evaluate?
Many a time we question why we evaluate much less the
process we deploy
Should we evaluate of our men before or after appointing
to serve as Church leaders?
If yes, how should we do it? (If no –Why not?)
Although we have concise guideline for benching ones
qualification to serve as a Church leader, The bible does
not expressly state how we should do it nor the what
process to use in evaluating men Christians for
leadership positions
However, Acts 6 gives us an outline / principle
Involvement of all the congregational members
Recognition of spiritually mature and growing men
16. HOW Should We Evaluate? -
Example
Carefully and prayerfully study 1 Tim 3: 8-13, after which,
you check each qualification to indicate that to the best of
your knowledge, the man you are choosing for consideration
(by name on this form) posses the qualities.
