Breakingviews: Law Firms Face Real
Disruption from Virtual Rival
U.S. law firms are facing real disruption from a virtual rival.
Already under threat from pickier clients and cheaper
alternatives, the profession now confronts Washington,
D.C.-based Clearspire. Flat fees, salaried attorneys and
online advice upend the traditional business model. This
upstart's approach could be the way of the future.
The last four years have been grim. Growth stalled, profits
dipped and major practices like Dewey & LeBoeuf's
collapsed. With overhead still bloated and customers
demanding discounts, the future isn't necessarily looking
much brighter. Billable hours slumped last year, according
to a recent report by Citi Private Bank and Hildebrandt
Consulting.
It's an impressive track record, though too brief to make
top firms sweat just yet. Few boards will be ready to entrust
major lawsuits and transactions to anyone but the Cravaths
and Skaddens of the world.
The second tier, though, should take note. Beefing up
online services, investing in cost-saving technology and

NAB eyes big gains with cloud provider
NATIONAL Australia Bank has marked its first foray into the "public cloud" arena with
computing giant Amazon Web Services, which could save the bank millions of dollars in the
long run.
A public cloud is managed by a third-party service provider that also offers infrastructure such as
storage, which is hosted at its data centre.
Public cloud services are available to all and sundry over the internet;; conversely, a private cloud
resides within the confines of a company's firewall or security parameter and can only be accessed
by authorised personnel.
The bank shifted nab.com.au from an internal legacy set-up into the Amazon public cloud more
than a week ago, said NAB enterprise delivery general manager Thor Essman.
It moved its health billing system website HICAPS into Amazon's hands to test the service prior to
the nab.com.au switch.
All information on nab.com.au except that which required a logon would be hosted by Amazon at
its Sydney data centre, Mr Essman said. This meant customer account details would remain within
the bounds of NAB's local data centres.
