Introduction to lathe
machine

A lathe mahine is a machine tool which
rotates the workpiece on its axis to
perform various operation such as
cutting ,sliding, knurling ,drilling ,with
tools that are applied to workpiece to
create an object which has symmetry
about an axis of rotation
Types of lathe machine
1.Wood working lathe
2.Patern makers lathes
3.Metalworking lathes
The main component of lathe
machine are as follows:
1.Bed
2.Carriage
3.Headstock
4.Back gear
5.Cone pully
6.Faceplate
7.Tailstock
8.Leadscrew
 Bed:
1 .It I the foundation of lathe and
supports all its parts.
2.Top of bed has a guide way which is
machined to precision.
 Head stochk:
1.Rigidly mounted on left side of the bed.
2
.Hold and rotating the workpiece at
multiple sped
 Tail stock:
1.Movable part of the lathe that carries
dead center.
2.Main function is to support the free
end of the work piece.
3.Also used to clamp tools like twist drill
and reamers for making holes.
4.Tailstock is mounted loosely on guide
ways can be moved and locked in
position.
Carriage assembly
 Saddle:
1. H shaped casting that slides over
the outer set of guide ways.
2. Serves as base for cross slide.
 Cross slide:
1. It is mounted on the saddle.
2. Enables lateral movement of cutting
tool laterally by means of cross slide
 Compound rest
1. Mounted on top of cross slide and
supports the tool post
2. It can be swiveled at an angle to
perform taper turnng operation
 Tool post
1. It is used to hold the tool
 Apron:
1. It is the part which is fitted saddle,
facing operator.
2. It houses levers, hand wheels
mechanism for manual and
automatic movement of carriage
assembly.
 Main drive:
1. It is an electric motor which drive the
spindle through transmission
 Lead screw:
1. It is a rod which runs longitudionally
in front of lathe bed.
2. The rotation of lead screw moves
the carriage to and fro
longitudionally during thread cutting
operation.
Operation of lath machine:
 Turning
 Taper turning
 Facing
 Thread cutting
 Knurling
 Drilling
 Boaring
 Grooving
 Parting off
 Spinning etc.
Turning
 It is an operation in which
the work piece is reduced
to the cylindrical section
of requited diameter
 Operation is carried out
with a single point cutting
tool
 Workpiece is
supported between
the two centers
permit rotation of
work piece
 Tool is feed
perpendicular to the
axis of work piece to
a known depth and
then moved parallel
to axis of work
Facing
 An operation
performed on lathe
to generate flat
surface.
 Directin of feed is
perpendicular to the
axis of the lathe
knurling
 Operation
performing on
lathe to generate
serrated surface
 Tool used is called
as “knurling tool”
Kurling
operation
 Tool consist of one
upper roller and one
lower which consist
the impression.
 Tool is set in such a
way that both rollers
touch the work.
Taper turning
 It is the operation of reducing the
diameter of the work piece gradually
along its length
Different types of taper turning
1. Compound slide swiveling method
2. Tailstock offset
3. By form tool
4. Taper turning attachment
5. By combination feed
Thread cutting
 A thread is a helical shaped groove
formed on cylindrical surface of yhe
workpiece
 Thread cutting is an operation
performed on lathe to produce threads
by using a tool whose shape will be
same as that of thread
Drilling
 Drilling is an peration to produce a
cylindrical hole in a work piece.
 Tool used is called as drill bit.
 Tool is hed on the tailstock and
stationary.
 Work is held I n the chuck.
 Tool is fed against the revolving work
by rotating hand wheel.
