 Language is a vehicle for communicating
meaning and messages
 SLA suggested two different ways of
developing ability in second languages:
Acquisition and learning.
 The behaviourists believe that SLA consists
of learners imitating what they hear and
develop habits in the SLA by routine
practice
 Behaviorist said that errors are seen as first
language habits interfering with the
acquisition of second language habits.
 The nativists assume that – consciously or
unconsciously – that somehow, second
language (L2) learning
can and should be like
learning our native language (L1)
 The crucial element in the language
acquisition process is the modified input
that learners are exposed to and the way in
which native speakers interact in
conversations with learners
 Learning (including SLA/SLL) is an active process.
 People learn to learn as they learn
 The crucial action of constructing meaning is mental
 Learning involves language: the language we use
influences learning
 Learning is a social activity
 Learning is contextual
 One needs knowledge to learn
 It takes time to learn
