2. May 5, 1789
• Louis XVI calls the
Estates-General for a
meeting in Versailles.
• This congregation
was held to discuss
France’s unstable
economy
3. June 17, 1789
• The 3rd Estate gains
new members such
as noblemen and
members of the
clergy.
• As a result the 3rd
Estate becomes “The
National Assembly”
4. June 20, 1789
• Deputies of the National
Assembly were locked
out of their meeting
chamber
• Instead they held the
meeting on the king’s
tennis court where they
pledged to never
separate and to meet
whenever necessary.
• This oath would stay in
place until a constitution
was enacted.
5. June 7-13, 1789
• 30 members of the
National Assembly are
chosen to create a
constitution.
• The National Assembly
gains power over laws
• Assemblies are held at
the Palais-Royal.
• A committee and
militia are formed in
Paris.
8. August 27, 1789
• The Declaration of
The Rights of Man is
put into effect by the
National Assembly
9. October 5, 1789
• A mob of women
pilfered the city’s
weapons and moved
on to the Palace of
Versailles.
• Once there they held
the king captive until
he gave in to their
demands
• Afterwards they forced
the the royal family to
follow them back to
Paris.
10. July 12 1790
• The Civil Constitution
of the Clergy is
instituted
11. September 30, 1791
• The first written
constitution of
France was made
• The French
Constitution of 1791
was similar in context
to Americas’
constitution.
12. June 2, 1791
• Louis XVI and the
royal family are
caught trying to flee
France.
