3. WORKING PRINCIPLE Mount the specimen between two sealed chambers whose pressure are different. The gas molecule will pass through the film from the higher side to the lower side under the function of pressure difference (gas concentration difference). Detect the pressure change of the lower side to get the transmission rate.
4. TESTING ITEMS The packaging materials’ gas transmission rate, permeability coefficient, diffusion coefficient, and solubility coefficient are the determinant parameters for its barrier properties. And they are effected by condition (temperature and humidity).
5. EXPLANATION OF THE TESTING ITEMS Gas transmission rate is the volume of gas which, under steady conditions, crosses unit area of the sample in unit time under unit pressure difference and at constant temperature. This volume is expressed at standard temperature and pressure. The reliability of the tested GTR depends on the evenness of the specimen thickness. The rate is usually expressed in cubic centimeters under standard atmospheric pressure per square meter 24h under a pressure difference of 1atm ( cm3/m2.d.atm ). Permeability coefficient is gas transmission rate at per unit thickness . This data is independent with materials’ thickness. It expresses the materials’ essential property. Diffusion coefficient represents molecular transmission capacity through film because of thermal motion of molecular chain. In one words, diffusion coefficient express the moving speed inside the film . Solubility coefficient expresses the speed of the gas molecule absorbed and pass through the surface of material.

14. “ DATA-CURVE-FITTING” can obtain various permeability data of the same kind of material with different thickness at various temperatures, based on the test results that are easily obtained under normal conditions. On the one side, this function makes impossible test a reality and reduces test costs simultaneously. On the other hand, it greatly improves test efficiency and forms reliable basis to scientific research and production.
