Traditional virtualization technologies have been used by cloud infrastructure providers for many years in providing isolated environments for hosting applications. These technologies make use of full-blown operating system images for creating virtual machines (VMs). According to this architecture, each VM needs its own guest operating system to run application processes. More recently, with the introduction of the Docker project, the Linux Container (LXC) virtualization technology became popular and attracted the attention. Unlike VMs, containers do not need a dedicated guest operating system for providing OS-level isolation, rather they can provide the same level of isolation on top of a single operating system instance.
An enterprise application may need to run a server cluster to handle high request volumes. Running an entire server cluster on Docker containers, on a single Docker host could introduce the risk of single point of failure. Google started a project called Kubernetes to solve this problem. Kubernetes provides a cluster of Docker hosts for managing Docker containers in a clustered environment. It provides an API on top of Docker API for managing docker containers on multiple Docker hosts with many more features.

DevoxxFR 2015 Talk http://cfp.devoxx.fr/2015/talk/WXY-1157/Scaling_Docker_with_Kubernetes
Kubernetes is an open source project to manage a cluster of Linux containers as a single system, managing and running Docker containers across multiple Docker hosts, offering co-location of containers, service discovery and replication control. It was started by Google and now it is supported by Microsoft, RedHat, IBM and Docker Inc amongst others.
Once you are using Docker containers the next question is how to scale and start containers across multiple Docker hosts, balancing the containers across them. Kubernetes also adds a higher level API to define how containers are logically grouped, allowing to define pools of containers, load balancing and affinity.

Kubernetes is exploding in popularity right now and has all the buzz and cargo-culting that Docker enjoyed just a few years ago. But what even is Kubernetes? How do I run my PHP apps in it? Should I run my PHP apps in it ?
Kubernetes is designed to be an extensible system. But what is the vision for Kubernetes Extensibility? Do you know the difference between webhooks and cloud providers, or between CRI, CSI, and CNI? In this talk we will explore what extension points exist, how they have evolved, and how to use them to make the system do new and interesting things. We’ll give our vision for how they will probably evolve in the future, and talk about the sorts of things we expect the broader Kubernetes ecosystem to build with them.

Containers are everywhere these days. Many of us are containerizing our applications to take advantage of the ease of a single artifact, but what can we do to make deploying these containers to a fleet of servers easier? Kubernetes is arguably the most popular container orchestration system to date. Kubernetes was born out of a decade of research at Google and has seen success; by itself as a fantastic way to orchestrate containers across multiple machines and as a component in other platforms.
This talk will begin with the anatomy and setup of a Kubernetes cluster. We'll demonstrate (live) taking a container containing a simple web service and launch our application into a small Kubernetes cluster. Next we'll perform a rolling update to deploy a new container version with zero downtime. Also, we'll check out some cool debugging features Kubernetes provides over the course of our demo.
Using Kubernetes for Continuous Integration and Continuous DeliveryCarlos Sanchez
Learn how to scale your Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery environment using containers. The Kubernetes project provides a container orchestration solution that greatly simplifies app deployments in large clusters and you can use Jenkins and Kubernetes together to run jobs on-demand.
Building and testing is a great use case for containers, both due to the dynamic and isolation aspects, but it increases complexity when scaling to multiple nodes and clusters.
Jenkins is an example of an application that can take advantage of Kubernetes technology to run Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery workloads. Jenkins and Kubernetes can be integrated to transparently use on demand containers to run build agents and jobs, and isolate job execution. It also supports CI/CD-as-code using Jenkins Pipelines and automated deployments to Kubernetes clusters. The presentation will allow a better understanding of how to use Jenkins on Kubernetes for container based, totally dynamic, large scale CI and CD.

KubeCon EU 2016: Leveraging ephemeral namespaces in a CI/CD pipelineKubeAcademy
One of the most underrated features of Kubernetes is namespaces. In the market, instead of using this feature, people are still stuck with having different clusters for their environments. This talk will try to break this approach, and will introduce how we end up using ephemeral namespaces within our CI/CD pipeline. It will cover the architecture of our system for running the user acceptance tests on isolated ephemeral namespaces with every bits and pieces running within pods. While doing this, we will set up our CI/CD pipeline on top of TravisCI, GoCD, and Selenium that is controlled by Nightwatch.js.

Kubernetes Cluster API - managing the infrastructure of multi clusters (k8s ...Tobias Schneck
Thanks to tools like kubeadm, Terraform or Ansible setting up a Kubernetes cluster on a dedicated environment is getting reachable, but what’s about setting up a bunch of cluster in multiple clouds in automatic way? This is still a challenge. Also if you want to do same in your own datacenter. In this talk we will take a look to the approach to orchestrate and manage a whole set of k8s cluster by the Cluster API project of kubernetes (a subproject of sig-cluster-lifecycle). The main idea behind it is to use the Kubernetes API itself to manage multiple clusters with there master and worker nodes in same way you would manage your PODs - define the needed resources and the responsible controller will take care for providing it.
After an overview about the concepts of cluster API, I will show what’s needed to implement a cluster API conform machine class/deployment. There I will see that adding your own provider isn’t that hard as you may aspect. At the end of the day it just requires a simple interface to implement. The corresponding kubermatic controllers we implemented at Loodse are available as open source, so its possible to play around with it. A live demo will show how easy it is to spin up and maintain multiple Kubernetes cluster at different public and on-premise cloud providers over one managing cluster. A final wrap up will summarize the current state of the Cluster API project and the advantages of managing clusters as cattles instead of pets.
Federated Kubernetes: As a Platform for Distributed Scientific ComputingBob Killen

Extending kubernetes with CustomResourceDefinitionsStefan Schimanski
The Kubernetes API provides a number of proven patterns to build distributed systems. More and more 3rd-party components are built on-top of Kubernetes and these patterns, providing their own resources stored in the cluster. In this presentation we will discuss CustomResourcesDefinitions and how they can extend the Kubernetes API in a quasi-native way. We look at the features, limits and their future.
Cutting the Kubernetes Monorepo in pieces – never learnt more about gitStefan Schimanski
Kubernetes uses a monorepo approach for development and testing. For Golang vendoring by 3rdparties we publish subdirectories as separate Github repositories (like k8s.io/client-go, k8s.io/apimachinery, k8s.io/api, etc.) continuously every night, while keeping all history, all Github merge commits and while rewriting commits with Godep-save updates to express dependencies. Sounds easy? It's not! Implementing this was the best learning experience of git and git internals and the topic of this talk.
While etcd was born in the cloud era, it does not really play well in a dynamic environment where nodes come and go and where IP addresses are ephemeral. Moreover, etcd is meant – with its RAFT algorithm at the core – as a consistent key-value store. It rather refuses to form or join a cluster than putting concistency at risk.
As a consequence it is very conservative in implementing advanced cluster member management mechanisms – or even heuristics to make the operation of an etcd cluster more comfortable for the admin.
The elastic-etcd binary experiments with those advanced member management heuristics. It is meant as a frontend to the etcd binary, applying these heuristics and then creating a matching command line for etcd itself.
Containers, cluster management, microservices, Kubernetes and many other buzzwords are flying around us all the time. Our team is building solutions that make it easy to cope with all the complexity around cluster infrastructure. In this talk we present the project we are working on, namely running Kubernetes on top of the Mesos cluster scheduler. Furthermore we show DCOS which makes it easy to deploy and run Kubernetes with a single command.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
