Rex gke-clustree
Clustree runs about 30 microservices on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) with ~280 pods across 15 nodes. They use Kubernetes for all stateless applications across environments and some stateful ones. Key aspects of their infrastructure include Docker, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Prometheus for metrics, Fluentd and Logstash for logging to Elasticsearch, and Influxdb with Grafana. They have experienced some issues but find Kubernetes provides great benefits like easy rolling upgrades and declarative infrastructure.

Key components include the master node for managing the cluster, minion nodes for hosting pods, and kubelet software for running pods and managing containers. Pods allow tight coupling of related containers, while labels provide loose organization of cooperating pods.
Platform Orchestration with Kubernetes and Docker
Big companies like Google containerize theirs environments for easier maintaining, scaling, and reliability. This talk gives an introduction how to build such an environment and maintain applications written in distinct programming languages. The container orchestration is done with Kubernetes by Google and Docker containers. For mass deployment CoreOS is used.

Kubernetes 101 and Fun
Cloud native applications are popular these days – applications that run in the cloud reliably und scale almost arbitrarily. They follow three key principles: they are built and composed as micro services. They are packaged and distributed in containers. The containers are executed dynamically in the cloud. Kubernetes is an open-source cluster manager for the automated deployment, scaling and management of cloud native applications. In this hands-on session we will introduce the core concepts of Kubernetes and then show how to build, package and operate a cloud native showcase application on top of Kubernetes step-by-step. Throughout this session we will be using an off-the-shelf MIDI controller to demonstrate and visualize the concepts and to remote control Kubernetes. Kubernetes can run application containers on clusters of physical or virtual machines.
It can also do much more than that.
Kubernetes satisfies a number of common needs of applications running in production, such as co-locating helper processes, mounting storage systems, distributing secrets, application health checking, replicating application instances, horizontal auto-scaling, load balancing, rolling updates, and resource monitoring.
However, even though Kubernetes provides a lot of functionality, there are always new scenarios that would benefit from new features. Ad hoc orchestration that is acceptable initially often requires robust automation at scale. Application-specific workflows can be streamlined to accelerate developer velocity.
This is why Kubernetes was also designed to serve as a platform for building an ecosystem of components and tools to make it easier to deploy, scale, and manage applications. The Kubernetes control plane is built upon the same APIs that are available to developers and users, implementing resilient control loops that continuously drive the current state towards the desired state. This design has enabled Apache Stratos and a number of other Platform as a Service and Continuous Integration and Deployment systems to build atop Kubernetes.
This presentation introduces Kubernetes’s core primitives, shows how some of its better known features are built on them, and introduces some of the new capabilities that are being added.

An Introduction to Kubernetes
Traditional virtualization technologies have been used by cloud infrastructure providers for many years in providing isolated environments for hosting applications. These technologies make use of full-blown operating system images for creating virtual machines (VMs). According to this architecture, each VM needs its own guest operating system to run application processes. More recently, with the introduction of the Docker project, the Linux Container (LXC) virtualization technology became popular and attracted the attention. Unlike VMs, containers do not need a dedicated guest operating system for providing OS-level isolation, rather they can provide the same level of isolation on top of a single operating system instance.
An enterprise application may need to run a server cluster to handle high request volumes. Running an entire server cluster on Docker containers, on a single Docker host could introduce the risk of single point of failure. Google started a project called Kubernetes to solve this problem. Kubernetes provides a cluster of Docker hosts for managing Docker containers in a clustered environment. It provides an API on top of Docker API for managing docker containers on multiple Docker hosts with many more features.

An Introduction to Kubernetes
Traditional virtualization technologies have been used by cloud infrastructure providers for many years in providing isolated environments for hosting applications. These technologies make use of full-blown operating system images for creating virtual machines (VMs). According to this architecture, each VM needs its own guest operating system to run application processes. More recently, with the introduction of the Docker project, the Linux Container (LXC) virtualization technology became popular and attracted the attention. Unlike VMs, containers do not need a dedicated guest operating system for providing OS-level isolation, rather they can provide the same level of isolation on top of a single operating system instance.
An enterprise application may need to run a server cluster to handle high request volumes. Running an entire server cluster on Docker containers, on a single Docker host could introduce the risk of single point of failure. Google started a project called Kubernetes to solve this problem. Kubernetes provides a cluster of Docker hosts for managing Docker containers in a clustered environment. It provides an API on top of Docker API for managing docker containers on multiple Docker hosts with many more features.

Kubernetes is an open source project to manage a cluster of Linux containers as a single system, managing and running Docker containers across multiple Docker hosts, offering co-location of containers, service discovery and replication control. It was started by Google and now it is supported by Microsoft, RedHat, IBM and Docker Inc amongst others.
Once you are using Docker containers the next question is how to scale and start containers across multiple Docker hosts, balancing the containers across them. Kubernetes also adds a higher level API to define how containers are logically grouped, allowing to define pools of containers, load balancing and affinity.

Introduction to Kubernetes
Kubernetes is an open-source system for managing containerized applications across multiple hosts. The master maintains state using etcd and schedules containers on worker nodes, while nodes run the kubelet daemon to manage Pods and their containers. Kubernetes handles tasks like replication, rollouts, and health checking through its API objects.

The technology industry has been abuzz about cloud workload containerization since the open source Docker project became a phenomenon in early 2014.
Meanwhile, an OpenStack Containers Team was formed and the Magnum project launched to provide users with a convenient Containers-as-a-Service solution for OpenStack environments.
As the potential of both technologies emerged, many wanted to see shared governance over the baseline container specification and runtime technology to ensure an open cloud ecosystem.
This past June, a new group was formed with a goal of creating open, industry standards around container formats and runtimes, called the Open Container Initiative (http://www.opencontainers.org).
So how will OpenStack Magnum influence - and be influenced by - the new OCI group? Why is the OCI under the stewardship of the Linux Foundation? What is the scope of the OCI effort? What project goals and/or principles will guide their work?

Here are the key steps to create an application from the catalog in the OpenShift web console:
1. Click on "Add to Project" on the top navigation bar and select "Browse Catalog".
2. This will open the catalog page showing available templates. You can search for a template or browse by category.
3. Select the template you want to use, for example Node.js.
4. On the next page you can review the template details and parameters. Fill in any required parameters.
5. Click "Create" to instantiate the template and create the application resources in your current project.
6. OpenShift will then provision the application, including building container images if required.

Building a SaaS with Nodejs, Docker, and CoreOS
Ross Kukulinski gave a presentation on building a SaaS application with Node.js, Docker, and CoreOS. He discussed how using Docker and CoreOS helped his company achieve goals like running multiple app versions consistently across environments, minimizing devops work. Docker allows building portable apps that run anywhere, while CoreOS is a Linux designed for massive server deployments using automated updates and Docker containers. It provides tools for fault tolerance, scalability and service discovery. Kukulinski then provided tips on Dockerizing Node apps, using Docker Compose, booting CoreOS clusters, monitoring with CoreGI and continuous deployment with Paz.

BayNode Logging Discussion
This document summarizes and compares several popular logging libraries for Node.js including winston, bunyan, node-rlog, log.js, and log4js-node. It notes that winston supports multiple transports including CouchDB, MongoDB, Loggly, Riak, file streams, and email but has suboptimal log rotation. Bunyan uses JSON messages, streams, and improved log rotation and also includes a DTrace provider. Other libraries mentioned include node-rlog for Riak, log.js for simple streaming, and log4js-node. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
