Digital Ethnography: New Ways of Knowing Ourselves and Our CultureRuss Nelson
Presentation given at the Web 2.0 Expo in New York on Nov 11, 2009.
Online advertisers and web analysts are awash in a sea of data: pageviews, CPMs sold, subscriptions, sentiment, friends, fans, click-through rates, comments, posts, re-tweets… These metrics are great at identifying the “Who?” and “What?” of online behavior but they often leave out the “How?”, “Where?”, and “Why?”.
Unlike traditional market research, ethnography uses observation to focus on what people do, not on what they say they do. Ethnography communicates a social story, pulling the audience into the daily lives of the respondents. Despite the introduction of new technologies like social media, humans are still telling the same, vivid stories, just in different ways.
Abstract: As profound web developer at quick pace, there has been expanded enthusiasm for method that assists proficiently with finding profound web interfaces. Nonetheless, because of the extensive volume of web assets and the dynamic way of profound web, accomplishing wide scope and high productivity is a testing issue. We propose a two-stage structure, in particular Smart Crawler, for effective gathering profound web interfaces. In the first stage, Smart Crawler performs site-based hunting down focus pages with the assistance of web indexes, abstaining from going by countless. To accomplish more exact results for an engaged slither, Smart Crawler positions sites to organize profoundly pertinent ones for a given point. In the second stage, Smart Crawler accomplishes quick in-site excavating so as to see most significant connections with a versatile connection positioning. To dispense with inclination on going by some exceedingly significant connections in shrouded web indexes, we outline a connection tree information structure to accomplish more extensive scope for a site. Our test results on an arrangement of delegate areas demonstrate the readiness and precision of our proposed crawler structure, which effectively recovers profound web interfaces from huge scale destinations and accomplishes higher harvest rates than different crawlers.

What are the pathways for spreading disinformation on social media platforms? This article addresses this question by collecting, categorising, and situating an extensive body of research on how application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by social media platforms facilitate the spread of disinformation. We first examine the landscape of official social media APIs, then perform quantitative research on the open-source code repositories GitHub and GitLab to understand the usage patterns of these APIs. By inspecting the code repositories, we classify developers' usage of the APIs as official and unofficial, and further develop a four-stage framework characterising pathways for spreading disinformation on social media platforms. We further highlight how the stages in the framework were activated during the 2016 US Presidential Elections, before providing policy recommendations for issues relating to access to APIs, algorithmic content, advertisements, and suggest rapid response to coordinate campaigns, development of collaborative, and participatory approaches as well as government stewardship in the regulation of social media platforms.

The impact of user-generated content on a variety of media industries and practices is by now well understood from a conceptual perspective (e.g. Benkler 2006; Jenkins 2006; Bruns 2008). What remains less thoroughly explored is the possibility to utilise the affordances of Web 2.0 technologies themselves to generate large datasets that can be used to track and evaluate user participation practices in order to develop a solid evidence base for further research into social media, and further development of social media projects, technologies, and policies. This presentation outlines research possibilities across a number of social media spaces, and uses the example of a current research project studying the Australian political blogosphere to explore potential methodological approaches.
The effects of Facebook use on civic participation attitudes and behaviour: A...Mark Dix
A paper written in 2011.
The following proposal suggests a network analysis approach to study the effects of web communication on civic participation. A three-phase mixed methods research design is proposed to examine firstly, the effect of supplementary communication via the social networking site Facebook, on the structure (quantity) and content (quality) of social ties within a network of citizens engaged in health and social care policymaking. It is proposed that the network variables of tie structure and content are then tested in an affective capacity against the participatory attitudes and behaviour of networked individuals. By reframing the study of web use and civic participation under a network theoretical framework, the proposed study will add to the existing literature in the field through recognition of the mediative capacity of relational ties in the formation of participatory capital. It is suggested that it is through their effect on relational tie structure and content within citizen participation networks, that social networking sites such as Facebook affect participatory attitudes and behaviour. To set a critical context for the proposed study, a final qualitative phase of research is suggested to examine the professional power structures impacting upon participant expressions of agency.
Chung-Jui LAI - Polarization of Political Opinion by News MediaREVULN
In 2016 US election, social media played a vital role in shaping public opinions as expressed by the news media that have created the phenomenon of polarization in the United States. Because social media gave people the ability to follow, share, post, comment below everything, the phenomenon of political opinions being spread easily and quickly on social media by the news agencies is bringing out a significantly polarized populace.
Consequently, it’s very important to understand the language differences on Twitter and figure out how propaganda spread by different political parties that influence or perhaps mislead public opinion. This talk will introduce the relationship among the social media, public opinion, and news media, then suggests the method to collect the tweets from Twitter and conduct sentimental and logistic regression analysis on them. Furthermore, this talk points out the special aspect on the relationship between the polarization and the topic of this conference (fake news, disinformation and propaganda).

Ethical Implications of Student Plagiarism in Myanmarijtsrd
This study presents efforts to establish evidence for the construct validity of scores on the ethical issue related to student plagiarism in Myanmar universities. Student plagiarism in colleges and universities has become a controversial issue in recent years. The case considered as the most commonly used immoral and unethical activities, are selected for evaluation, and the participants select these activities according questionnaire. Recognizing the difficulty in defining plagiarism while still acknowledging the practical importance of doing so, this system finds the common element about student plagiarism to be the lack of appropriate attribution to the original source. Sampling of User Behavior Using Online Social NetworkEditor IJCATR
The popularity of online networks provides an opportunity to study the characteristics of online social network graphs is important, both to improve current systems and to design new application of online social networks. Although personalized search has been proposed for many years and many personalization strategies have been investigated, it is still unclear whether personalization is consistently effective on different queries for different users, and under different search contexts. In this paper, we study performance of information collection in a dynamic social network. By analyzing the results, we reveal that personalized search has significant improvement over common web search.
The mixing time of thee sampling process strongly depends on the characteristics of the graph.
Mining and Analyzing Academic Social NetworksEditor IJCATR
Academics establish relationships by way of various interactions like jointly authoring a research paper or report, jointly
supervising a thesis, working jointly on a project, etc. Some of these relationships are ubiquitous whereas other are hard to keep track
of. Of all types of possible academic and research collaborations, co-authorship is best documented. In this paper we analyze the coauthorship
based academic social networks of computer science engineering departments of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as
evidenced from their research publications produced during 2011 and 2015. We use social network analysis metrics to study the
collaboration networks in four leading IITs. From experimental results it can be concluded that IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur have a
close knit collaboration network whereas the collaboration network of IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras is fragmented. However, the
collaboration networks of all the four IITs exhibit similar network properties as expected from any other collaboration network
Text mining has turned out to be one of the in vogue handle that has been joined in a few research
fields, for example, computational etymology, Information Retrieval (IR) and data mining. Natural
Language Processing (NLP) methods were utilized to extricate learning from the textual text that is
composed by people. Text mining peruses an unstructured form of data to give important
information designs in a most brief day and age. Long range interpersonal communication locales
are an awesome wellspring of correspondence as the vast majority of the general population in this
day and age utilize these destinations in their everyday lives to keep associated with each other. It
turns into a typical practice to not compose a sentence with remedy punctuation and spelling. This
training may prompt various types of ambiguities like lexical, syntactic, and semantic and because of
this kind of indistinct data; it is elusive out the genuine data arrange. As needs be, we are directing
an examination with the point of searching for various text mining techniques to get different
textual requests via web-based networking media sites. This review expects to depict how
contemplates in online networking have utilized text investigation and text mining methods to
identify the key topics in the data. This study concentrated on examining the text mining
contemplates identified with Facebook and Twitter; the two prevailing web-based social networking
on the planet. Aftereffects of this overview can fill in as the baselines for future text mining research.

Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia (ISSN 2383-9449) is a refereed biannual journal that takes a lead on a new scholarship in Asia. In the past, the JCEA was dedicated to the study of current political, social and economic trends in East and Southeast Asia. But now, the JCEA finds unique aspects of Asian scholarship by expanding its scope to (socio-technical) convergence and future (network) studies. The JCEA editors are working very hard to boost the scholarly presence of new Asian scholarship around the world and secure its reputation as an emerging world-class publishing outlet. The editors welcome manuscripts based on original research or significant reexamination of existing literature.
close
close

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
