The document summarizes the lithostratigraphy and hydrocarbon production of the Upper Indus Basin located in northern Pakistan between latitudes 32° and 34° N and longitudes 70° and 74° E. Sedimentation in the basin began in the Precambrian and included formations from the Cambrian through Miocene periods. The basin has produced oil and gas from various formations, with the major producing fields located in Karak, Kohat, Attock, and Chakwal districts. Several dry wells were also drilled in the basin.
3. The Kohat-Potwar Basin also called Upper Indus Basin is
situated in northern Pakistan and located between lat.
32° and 34° N and, long. 70° and 74° E.
4. Depositional Settings of the Kohat-
Potwar Basin
Sedimentation in the Kohat-Potwar area began in the
Precambrian and lasted until the Pleistocene.
Three major unconformities in the area are Ordovician to
Carboniferous , Mesozoic to late Permian and Eocene to
Oligocene.
Salt Range Formation which is overlain metamorphic
rocks reported as the oldest sedimentary rocks in the
Kohat-Potwar Basin
5. Cambrian rocks comprised sandstone, siltstone, shale
and dolomite represented by Khewra, Kussak, Jutana,
and Baghanwala Formations.
After Cambrian sequence there is unconformity and the
type is disconformity.
Cease of deposition was up to Permian.
Permian sequence of Kohat-Potwar Basin includes :
Tobra Formation ,Dandot Formation, Warcha sandstone,
Sardhai Formation, Amb Fm, Wargal L.st, Chhidru Fm.
6. Unconformity exist after Permian and then Triassic
sequence starts.
Triassic sequence : Mianwali Fm, Chak Jabbi L.st, Tredian
Fm, Kingriali Fm.
Unconformity and then Jurassic sequence was
deposited.
Jurassic sequence : Datta Formation, Shinawri
Formation, Samana Suk Formation.
7. Unconformity and then Cretaceous sequence was
deposited.
Cretaceous Sequence : Chichali Formation, Lumshiwal
Formation, Kawagarh Formation.
Unconformity and then Paleocene sequence.
Paleocene sequence : Hangu Formation, Lockhart L.st,
Patala Formation.
8. Unconformity and then Eocene sequence.
Eocene sequence : Mrgala Hill Limestone, Chorgali
Formation, Kuldana Formation, Nummal Formation,
Sakaser Limestone, Margalla L.st, Panoba shales,
Bahadur Khel salt , Chorgali Fm, Shekhan Fm, Jatta
Gypsum, Kuldana Fm, Kohat Fm.
Oligocene is missing.
Miocene sequence include Rawalpindi group.
Late Miocene-Pliocene Siwalik Group is present.
