This presentation briefly describes two projects that are being implemented by CABI Central and West Asia in Pakistan. E-Zaraat [Urdu for e-Agriculture] is a ground breaking project funded by DFID. Through this project the entire Agriculture Extension data collection and reporting has been automated. The data from the field is collected via a mobile application. The reports are generated through a web application. A three way help line backed by experts and FAQs was also established to cater to the needs of the farmers and improve reach of the extension workers in the field. The second project has pioneered e-learning in Agriculture in Pakistan. The project is funded by United States Department of Agriculture. The project focuses on improving the capacity of the Regulatory officers in Pakistan by providing e-learning modules on Sanitary and Photo-sanitary measures. This would eventually help in improving international trade with Pakistan. The project is being implemented in partnership with USDA and Texas A&M University

While internet usage is growing in rural India, only 4.6% have accessed it due to lack of infrastructure and knowledge. The mKisan SMS portal allows government departments to send SMS messages to farmers in their own languages with information. It uses services like USSD, IVRS, pull SMS, and push SMS to reach large numbers of farmers via their mobile phones. Farmers can register to receive push SMS advisories on topics relevant to them through various channels including a website, phone calls, SMS, or visiting government offices.

This project uses soil moisture sensor and temperature sensor to detect the water quantity present in agriculture and water level sensor is used for detecting water level in tank. In this system we monitor status of the sensors through WEB and GSM technologies. Here temperature, soil moisture and water level can be monitored on web page through micro controller and information will be send by SMS. This page contains all the information about the status of the sensors. This information will be viewed at remote location by using GPRS technology. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are playing a key role in this scenario. New generations, mainly, are in permanent movement, conceiving the two spaces as complementary. Mobile phones, particularly, are providing today a great platform to connect them to the "rurbanity," a new (key) concept to understand hybrid spaces where cities and the countryside are part of the same social reality.

How ICTs can make a difference to livelihoods

Practical Applications of Mobile Applications in Higher Ed

Innovation in plant breeding is imperative to meet the growing demand for staple food crops in developing countries. Modernizing breeding was therefore a major objective of the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP, http://www.generationcp.org). In this endeavor,the GCP createdthe Integrated Breeding Platform (IBP, https://www.integratedbreeding.net),to provide breeding material,knowledge and tools to assist researchers in their work,including custom-built software forreliable data management – the Breeding Management System (BMS Pro).These activities were sustained mainly through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,which ended this last September after 10 years of direct collaboration. The IBP has proven to be agile, adaptable and bold over the years, and is now applying the same spirit and resolve to find revenue from both public and private sources to continue serving its broad basis of stakeholders, among which national programs in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remainfront and center. BMS Pro – a professional-grade software package distributed through LAN or cloud – is being used by close to 700 users in over 30 organizations of different types around the world (17 in SSA). We have learned that digitizing breeding is less about technology than it is about changing mindsets;it requires proper support on the ground,and thatmanagement commits to empower adoption within institutions. Although there is still some way to go before reaching routine adoption, a solid basis has been established and continues to be supported by a new generation of African breeders.Breeding digitization in Africa is well underway.E rate presentation

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
