Kizilyurt is located in Dagestan on the banks of the Sulak River. It is one of the youngest towns in Dagestan, originating in the 18th century when fortresses were built along the Sunzha, Terek, and Sulak Rivers. One such fortress at the point where the Sulak River flows from the mountains onto the plains helped establish the new town of Kizilyurt. The population was originally very poor and engaged in farming and cattle herding, but irrigation projects, utilities, and industrialization in the late 20th century transformed Kizilyurt into a modern town with developed infrastructure.

After his capture, Shamil was exiled to cities in the Russian Empire and eventually allowed to take a pilgrimage to Mecca, where he died in 1871.

Kubachi
