Thomas Kymer was born in Haverfordwest in 1722 and exploited the mineral wealth of the area, becoming a Burgess of Kidwelly by 1759. In 1766, he opened the first canal in Wales, linking Carway to the port of Kidwelly, and held meetings for the canal in the building then known as the Pelican Hotel. He died in 1784 and was buried in St. Mary's Churchyard.
