The municipality of Giurgiu, located 65 km south of Bucharest along the Danube River, has historically been an important international port. It forms a Euroregion with its neighboring city of Ruse, Bulgaria, located on a major pan-European transport route. Some notable landmarks in Giurgiu include the town hall building from 1936, a clock tower that was part of the city's old fortification system, and the Giurgiu harbor, one of the main ports on the Danube River.
