Čakovec is the capital of Međimurje County in northern Croatia located about 90km from Zagreb. It has a population of around 20,000 people and is an economic, cultural and administrative center known for its vineyards, textile industry and proximity to the Mura and Drava rivers. Čakovec traces its origins to the 13th century when a wooden fort was built by Count Dimitriusa Chakyja, and it saw significant growth starting in the 16th century under the House of Zrinski who ruled the surrounding lands.
