In August 1999, Chechen and Dagestani Islamist militants led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab invaded the Russian republic of Dagestan in support of separatist rebels, seizing several villages. However, Russian forces assembled a counterattack under General Viktor Kazantsev and were able to push the militants back into Chechnya by mid-September after weeks of fighting, bombing campaigns, and stiff local resistance. Over a hundred militants and civilians were killed in the clashes as federal forces succeeded in defending Dagestan from the invading separatist forces.
