5. Essential Oils Industry In-depth
• Essential Oils have a wide and diversified range of applications in different industries such as;
pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, perfumes, food/beverages/ flavors, and aromatherapy.
• Essential oils are commonly extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes
include expression, solvent extraction, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, and cold pressing.
These are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, etc, flavoring food and liquids, and for adding
scents to incense and household cleaning products.
• Producing flavors and fragrances is based on two techniques, ‘Creation’ and ‘Imitation’.
a. The ‘Creation Process’ is carried out through mixing a number of natural elements and
aroma chemicals at a designated percentage per each to create a new flavor or fragrance
with a specific taste or smell.
b. The ‘Imitation Process’ is carried out through analyzing the targeted sample, dissecting its
main components, combining certain elements, and finally resulting in a new similar sample
bearing the same characteristics of the original one.
