The LRA conflict devastated northern Uganda for nearly 20 years as the LRA forcibly recruited from the Acholi tribe and displaced over 1.4 million Acholi into camps. Both the LRA and Ugandan government bear responsibility - the LRA terrorized the Acholi through abductions and attacks, while the Ugandan government neglected the displaced Acholi in camps, pursuing its own interests in Acholi land and allowing conditions that amounted to slow genocide. A peace agreement was finally reached in 2006, though the LRA remains active in other parts of Africa.

This week our students have had the opportunity to be part of real-time current events. With the media circus buzzing around Kony2012, Invisible Children, and the LRA – I created a (fairly) student-friendly powerpoint that objectively explains the background of Kony and the LRA. I am not getting into the hype surrounding supporters and opponents of Invisible Children, but have included them as well as other organizations at the end of the presentation to give students options regarding how to get involved.
No matter what people feel about Invisible Children, it’s obvious that they have created a successful awareness raising campaign. My students have had a lot of questions about the whole situation, so I created this powerpoint that I am now sharing with you.

The Arab Spring was a series of protests and uprisings in the Middle East that began in Tunisia in late 2010 in response to corruption, lack of political freedom, poor economic prospects, and repressive regimes. The protests spread to other countries including Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, and Syria. In Tunisia and Egypt, the presidents were ousted, but both countries faced ongoing instability and power struggles during their transition periods. The Arab Spring uprisings successfully removed long-standing dictators in some countries like Tunisia and Egypt, but also led to instability, violence, and civil wars in countries like Libya, Yemen, and Syria. While the removal of corrupt leaders was initially hopeful, the uprisings unearthed deep religious and political divisions in societies and unstable transitional governments failed to establish democracy. South Sudan, the country that gained independence in 2011 with huge international fanfare and support came apart in just one week. South Sudan was plunged into a civil war on December 15, 2013, following a fall out between President Salva Kiir from the Dinka ethnic group and the then Vice President Riek Machar from the Nuer ethnic group . Following this power crisis, South Sudan descended into a national, political and ethnic conflict, rapidly spreading across many parts of the country and leading to the death of thousands of women, children and men.

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is a religious extremist group that originated in northern Uganda in the 1980s seeking to overthrow the government. Led by Joseph Kony, the LRA's goals later shifted to forming a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments but it now primarily attacks civilian villages to gain recruits and supplies. The LRA has displaced hundreds of thousands of people in central Africa and forced tens of thousands of children to serve as soldiers. Efforts to stop the LRA through military interventions have had limited success, so alternative approaches like placing local defense units in villages or arming civilians are being considered.

- 2. Background In 1987 the LRA (a rebel Guerilla group) began to wage a terror campaign against the Ugandan government, forcibly recruiting its own people, the Acholi tribe. Because of this a devastating civil war broke out in Uganda until the peace talks were settled in 2006.

- 4. Thesis The LRA is a direct cause of devastation to the Acholi tribe in Uganda, creating an entirely new phase of civil war by their abductions, displacing cities and acts of terror, However the Ugandan government is also to blame.
- 5. Yoweri Museveni Allegedly to protect the Acholi people from the LRA, president Yoweri Musevini forced millions of civilians into IDP (Internally displaced persons) camps throughout this period of 20 years. - conditions - deaths Not actually taking care of his people.
- 6. Displacement Camps Museveni's government forced 1.4 to 1.9 million civilians into camps where they were to be protected by the Ugandan army. Yet the northerners living in these camps were prone to attack by the LRA and the national army alike, and unable to raise their own food.
- 7. Hundreds of thousands of Acholi have abandoned their homes in northern Uganda for fear of being abducted, and now live in refugee camps in appalling conditions,

If they aren’t on their land, the government can have it….?
- 9. Orchestrated Genocide DEFINITION : GENOCIDE Acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part a national, ethical, racial or religious group. Now, think of the Acholi people: Planned neglect, slow death, slow motion, not broadcasted around the world, government knows these conditions are happening, doesn't’t do anything, no protection for the people.
