In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
The institution logo we used consisted of black and white colors. This is so that the
audience are aware that its not a comedy film because it hasn't got bright colors that
grabs everyone's attention. Also the name indicates that the film revolves around time,
the ticking sound in the background implicates that time is running out and it’s a film that
flows in a fast pace.
Uses
Our film uses the film code of conventions of a social
realism film by having black actors playing the
‘negative’ role in the modern society. We got this idea
from Kidulthood because the majority of the actors
were black are presented in a similar way we wanted
to portray our characters.
Using an ethnic minority character in my film
incorporates the difference between two races ‘black’
and ‘white’.
The film begins with medium shots of each character,
this is so that the audience knows who the main
characters are. Having this means that we are able to
see the attitude of each the characters when they are
being established to the audience.
From the beginning we can see that ‘Karl’ has a
serious face which indicates that he is the character
that has the worst attitude and doesn’t like the
situation she is in. Him wearing a hoody also shows
that he is ‘streetwise’ who could be seen as a
‘gangster’.
‘Trevor’ who is played by ‘Paulo’ has a different type
of attitude compared to Karl, we can see this in his
facial expression as he looks a it more calmer.
‘Tracy’s’ facial expression reflects a lot on how she
feels, she seems worried about the situation she is in
but she is a sly character.
Like Kidulthood we establish the setting, having the
police station nearer to the end means that we able
to recall that all the characters were at the police
station.
From this we know that he film involves drama
because the themes explored throughout the
opening.
challenge
We have a shot which is blurred out a little bit to establish that the opening has gone
back in time. It’s a short clip of when he was ‘apparently’ associating with one of the
main characters. This gives away some of the narrative however the audience don’t
actually know whether he is communicating with her which makes it more
interesting.
In the flashbacks we have the time of the flashback, this is braking the convention
because usually instead of writing the time they would do a full flashback of what
happened during that time he went missing. But this helps the audience recognize the
moments when ‘Curtis’ went missing. It is very helpful for the audience to know the
time the main character went missing because they are then able to solve some of the
missing pieces of the puzzle.
We brake the codes and conventions
of he social realism as in the
beginning we go from a mid shot to a
slow zoom into a close up shot. But
from this we get a clear view of the
facial expression of this character,
and the audience are able to have a
view on what kind of character he is,
especially because he is the brother
of the main character.
