Safe with the Sharck  Probe
Application Note
The Challenge
Refinery pressure vessels are
subjected to the harshest
conditions around
• Carbon steel welds are critical
components prone to several cracking
mechanisms in different zones
(toe, cap, HAZ)
In this application welds are often controlled with wet magnetic
particle testing (MT).
• This type of magnetic particle testing uses particles suspended in a water or
oil solution. The particles can also be fluorescent to take advantage of the
eye’s sensitivity to color.

The Challenge
Wet MT is:
• Messy
• Requires surface preparation
• Requires post-inspection cleaning
• Requires repainting or recoating weld,
• Time consuming
• Unable to measure defect depth
• Unable to archive data
Any surface-breaking defects in pressure vessel carbon steel
welds are target defects.

The Solution
The patent-pending Sharck™ probe was designed
specifically for this type of application.
• Spring-loaded fingers designed to adapt to geometry of weld crown
• Enables scanning cap, toe, and HAZ in single pass
• Built-in encoder to precisely position defects along welds

The Solution
Unlike wet MT, the tangential ECA (TECA™) technology
incorporated into Sharck probe can:
• Size length and depth of cracks
• Without surface preparation
• Designed to monitor (as opposed to cancelling it out) and compensate for
liftoff
Sharck is also designed to
• Scan at speeds up to 200 mm/s (8 in/s)
• Record inspection data
• Display data as intuitive 2D/3D C-scans

The Solution

Under actual conditions, Sharck detected and measured
cracking in cap and toe of abrasive-blasted welds 12.7 mm
(½ in) thick.
• Cracks presence confirmed with wet MT
• Sharck probe also detected transverse cracks
Longitudinal crack approx. 6 mm (0.25 in) deep,
78 mm (3 in) long

The Challenge Refinery pressure vessels are subjected to the harshest conditions around • Carbon steel welds are critical components prone to several cracking mechanisms in different zones (toe, cap, HAZ) In this application welds are often controlled with wet magnetic particle testing (MT). • This type of magnetic particle testing uses particles suspended in a water or oil solution. The particles can also be fluorescent to take advantage of the eye’s sensitivity to color. 2 © Eddyfi NDT Inc. 2009–2016

The Challenge Wet MT is: • Messy • Requires surface preparation • Requires post-inspection cleaning • Requires repainting or recoating weld, • Time consuming • Unable to measure defect depth • Unable to archive data Any surface-breaking defects in pressure vessel carbon steel welds are target defects. 3 © Eddyfi NDT Inc. 2009–2016

The Solution The patent-pending Sharck™ probe was designed specifically for this type of application. • Spring-loaded fingers designed to adapt to geometry of weld crown • Enables scanning cap, toe, and HAZ in single pass • Built-in encoder to precisely position defects along welds 4 © Eddyfi NDT Inc. 2009–2016

The Solution Unlike wet MT, the tangential ECA (TECA™) technology incorporated into Sharck probe can: • Size length and depth of cracks • Without surface preparation • Designed to monitor (as opposed to cancelling it out) and compensate for liftoff Sharck is also designed to • Scan at speeds up to 200 mm/s (8 in/s) • Record inspection data • Display data as intuitive 2D/3D C-scans 5 © Eddyfi NDT Inc. 2009–2016

The Solution 6 © Eddyfi NDT Inc. 2009–2016 Under actual conditions, Sharck detected and measured cracking in cap and toe of abrasive-blasted welds 12.7 mm (½ in) thick. • Cracks presence confirmed with wet MT • Sharck probe also detected transverse cracks Longitudinal crack approx. 6 mm (0.25 in) deep, 78 mm (3 in) long Transverse crack
