SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING PLAN
The Self-Directed Learning Plan (SDLP) is a process and
document to chronicle your accomplishments and learning steps
through the MSN program and beyond as they relate to your
professional goals.
The SDLP will help you to identify and target the array of
competencies you need to reach your professional objectives
and to help you organize your Kaplan MSN learning experience
to suit your career objectives.
The SDLP will be a section of your Program Portfolio, so take
some quality introspective time to consider strengths and areas
of development relevant to your career objectives. Knowing
your strengths and areas to develop, you can begin a plan to
find out what you need to do to achieve your career goals. We
encourage you to continue to reflect on the identified areas
throughout the MSN program. If you feel strength or
development area is no longer relevant, you may add another to
take its place. At any time, you may also add additional areas.

Anticipated Nursing Role:
Professional Goal (3-5 years) from now: My long-term goal (7-
10 years) is to open my own practice offering primary care to
patients across populations suffering from common to acute to
chronic illnesses. In this case, my 3 to 5 years professional
goals must fit in this plan. They include completing my MSN
program, getting my NP licensure and finding suitable settings,
preferably a busy hospital offering all-round NP services from
which I can garner ample experience to enable me open my own
practice. This implies not just hands on care, but
leadership/managerial skills that would be critical in helping me
direct healthcare services delivered in my practice.
Knowledge that prepares a graduate student for an advanced
nursing role:
Knowledge of background in humanities and sciences, as it
pertains to NP. This is upon recognizing that NPs prepared at
graduate/master’s level should be reading to integrate genetics,
organization sciences, biopsychosocial fields, public health and
scientific findings derived from nursing to continually improve
delivery of nursing care in various settings. Knowledge of
system, as well as, organizational and personal leadership is
critical to enable an NP direct safe, cost conscious and quality
patient care at a personal and organizational level. Considering
that NPs must deal with complex issues and deliver
comprehensive care, knowledge of integrating and translating
research into practice is needed to enable NPs use best-evidence
practice to resolve dire patient and clinical settings problems.
NPs must also have the knowledge of how healthcare
technologies and informatics are used to enable them enhance
communication and care to increase efficiency and
effectiveness. This also goes for knowledge of advocacy and
healthy policy to be able to engage themselves in policy
development at organizational and political level to advance NP
practice, as well as, knowledge of population health to
understand the conditions and dynamics of patients that the NP
delivered care to. More so, knowledge of clinical prevention
and inter-professional collaboration is needed, including how to
communication, for inter-professional teams and lead them.
This also goes for knowledge of how to formulate patient-
centered and comprehensive care plans. Comment by Lisa

Skills that prepare a graduate student for an advanced nursing
role:
Specific skills that will be needed for the NP role include
advanced decision-making, diagnostic reasoning and health
assessment skills. This also goes for skills for implementing and
prescribing therapeutic interventions, both pharmacological and
non-pharmacological. This also goes for proper communication
skills to communicate appropriately with other health
professionals and to patients. This also goes for analytical skills
to help analyze the complex issues in the clinical settings, and
collaborative skills to enable delivery of comprehensive care
through collaborating with other healthcare providers. This also
goes for flexibility to propel through the changing NP practice,
life-balance to make one productive, as well as, a healthcare
facility by preventing burnout, time management skills,
organizational skills, and extremely important, the advanced
clinical skills to allow delivery of quality/advanced care to
patients. Comment by Lisa Wehner: good point.
Accomplishments that prepare a graduate student for an
advanced nursing role:
Accomplishments required to prepare for the NP role include
completing a Master’s degree, with the specialty being NP,
getting licensed/certified and having sufficient practicum
experience of the NP core roles and responsibilities to allow
one to start practicing. Ultimately, the major accomplishment is
understanding and having the ability to perform NP core roles
and responsibility with proficiency and precision, including
formulating comprehensive care plans, prescribing medication,
making proper diagnoses, directing care, as well as, providing
care to patients of different population and in different settings
under scope of practice. This is in addition to developing a solid
personal nursing philosophy that acts as a frame of reference
throughout the NP career. Most importantly, a major
accomplishment must be developing at a personal level by
allowing the education process nurture a character/personality
attuned to nursing. This implies developing compassion, self-
confidence and all other attributes that would make an NP stand
out in the delivery of care. Comment by Lisa Wehner: Great.

Strengths to Leverage
Step 1: The most effective and satisfied people align their work
with their natural strong points. Identify 3-5 of your key
strengths (see Column 1 below); these could be a competency,
skill, ability, knowledge area or personal characteristic. Think
about how you can leverage those strengths to be effective in
your work, achieve your professional goals, and become a
leader in your profession.
Step 2: At the beginning of each course in your MSN program,
answer the following question either using this template or a
narrative format. What do you expect to learn in this course that
will help you leverage your strengths? (See Column 2 below) Be
as specific as you can, e.g., assume that a strength is your
analytical ability.
Step 3: Answer the following questions either using this
template or a narrative format. Did you learn what you expected
to learn? (See Column 3 below) Was there information or
insights that helped you that you didn’t expect to learn at the
outset of the course? What changes or additions, if any, will you
make to your SDLP based on learning in this course?
Step 1: Strengths to Leverage
Step 2: Course Learning Goals
Step 3: Course Outcomes & Assessment
Strength 1 – Time management skills
Understand how to use time management skills to increase
efficiency in nursing, in spite of the clinical environment being
unpredictable Comment by Lisa Wehner: Yes and how is this
different as an NP?
· Ability to and understand how to prioritize tasks, come up
with a weekly, monthly and daily personal and work schedule,
as well as, minimize destruction to reduce interruptions and
other unnecessary interruptions that slow nurses down making
them unable to adhere to schedule.
· This also goes for delegation to avoid doing unnecessary work
when burdened, and take time to –re-plan when the schedule id
disrupted. Comment by Lisa Wehner: good Comment by Lisa
Wehner: how do these compare to course outcomes?
Strength 2 - knowledge of different roles
Breaking down, understanding different APN roles as per
population foci to allow me pick a population of interest.
· Differentiate my role and responsibilities of NP from other
APN roles and responsibilities. These will help me avoid role
conflict, especially when working in interdisciplinary teams in
which other APNs are involved, as well as, use share
responsibilities/roles as the basis of building relationship by
working together in these roles with other members.
Comment by Lisa Wehner: Good point.
Strength 3 - stress tolerance
Understanding the importance of stress tolerance in effectively
handling the stressful nursing environment and delivering care
Comment by Lisa Wehner: Good and how will this be
different as an APN? Is this management of stress instead of
tolerance?
· Ability to understand and display stress tolerance ability, such
as in the case of dealing with stressful situations calmly and
accepting criticism
Areas to Develop
Step 1: We all have strengths, but we also have areas on which
we need to improve. As related to your career goal, identify 3-5
areas to develop (see Column 1 below); these could be a
competency, skill, ability, knowledge area or personal
characteristic. Think about how you can improve in these areas
so that you can achieve your professional goals and become a
leader in your profession.
Step 2: What do you expect to learn in this course that will help
you to develop in the identified area? (See Column 2 below)
Step 3: Answer the following questions either using this
template. Did you learn what you expected to learn? (See
Column 3 below) Was there information or insights that helped
you that you didn’t expect to learn at the outset of the course?
What changes or additions, if any, will you make to your SDLP
based on learning in this course?
Step 1: Areas to Develop
Step 2: Course Learning Goals
Step 3: Course Outcomes & Assessment
Area 1 - System Evaluation: I have limited knowledge of
managing departments and organizations among other
healthcare entities as systems Comment by Lisa Wehner: Good
point.
Identify indicators and measures of a system, actions and
performance required in correcting, as well as, improving the
performance as aligned to the goal of system
· The understanding of different systems in healthcare, their
dynamics, as well as, means to assess them
· Knowledge of problems that may exists which hamper their
performance and ways to address them. Comment by Lisa
Wehner: Please specify this and also remember to relate the
goals to course outcomes and assessments. Please expand on
this information.
Area 2 – management and administration: Ibelieve that I am
deficient in this area and if I am to own/run my own practice, in
the next 3-5 years, I must have more knowledge in this area
Acquire skills and knowledge of management and business
principles employed in resource allocations, leadership
technique, HR modeling, and coordination of resources,
production methods and strategic planning. Comment by Lisa
Wehner: How will this course assist with this? Will you take
courses in business as part of your college degree?
· Expected outcome and points of assessments are the ability to
formulate strategic plans, as well as, understand different
leadership styles/techniques and how to employ them. This also
goes for the ability to lead people. I hope that in my practice as
a nurse, I will manage to manage/lead/coordinate my nursing
unit better. Comment by Lisa Wehner: How will this help
you?
Area 3 – Self –Control: I tend to live in the moment at times
and this works against me when caring for patients with acute
conditions or in need of emergency care. Getting overwhelmed
by situations at times makes me unable to think clearly.
Understanding what is self-control, how it works, as well as, its
importance in nursing. Comment by Lisa Wehner: How does
this course assist with this?
· Understand and acquire the ability to maintain composure,
control anger, avoid aggressive behavior and keep all emotions
in check even when confronted with challenging situation to be
able to focus on delivering care to improve patient outcomes.
Reflection
What do you expect to learn in this course that will help you
achieve your academic and professional goals? (Your reflection
should be at least one well developed paragraph.)
I believe this course is critical in my professional and academic
goals, as it helps form the foundation of my solid career in NP.
The course will help me garner critical knowledge and skills
that will help me garner hands-on/clinical skills, management
and leadership competencies critical in offering safe, efficient
and effective care. On clinical skills, I will be able to acquire
advanced knowledge and skills on how to conduct
comprehensive patient assessments, diagnose clients, offer
diagnostic tests and use complex decision-making and problem-
solving skills to arrive at the correct diagnosis and design a
comprehensive, holistic care plan for patients. In the case of
leadership and management, I will be able to garner knowledge
and skills to help me leverage different leadership styles,
attributes and abilities as per situations to lead others
effectively towards delivering care. In the case of management,
I will be able to garner skills and knowledge of budgetary and
resource allocations, and interconnectedness of care across
systems among other issues. Although these are critical to my
professional and academic goals, I believe that I will garner
knowledge and experience in other NP areas to improve of my
NP competencies to be in a position to attain my goals. The
course will help me attain my MSN degree and this basically
imply that I can get licensed as an NP to start practicing in
different challenging settings, preferably a large hospital in
which I can learn how to deal with complex cases, as well as,
direct care. I believe that an experience of 3-5 years will
sufficiently enable me become proficient in my ability to start
my own practice. Comment by Lisa Wehner: definitely
Comment by Lisa Wehner: after graduation?
A good job, Liu.

principles employed in resource allocations, leadership
technique, HR modeling, and coordination of resources,
production methods and strategic planning.
(Your reflection
should be at least one well developed paragraph.)I think this
course is very important in my professional and academic goals,
since it helps form the foundation of my career as a Nurse
Practitioner. The course will help me garner critical knowledge
and skills that will help me garner hands-on/clinical skills,
management and leadership competencies critical in offering
safe, efficient and effective care. Clinical skills, I will be able
to acquire advanced knowledge and skills on how to conduct
comprehensive patient assessments, comprehensive diagnose,
diagnostic tests and use complex decision-making and problem-
solving skills to arrive at the correct diagnosis and design a
comprehensive, holistic care plan for patients. In the case of
leadership and management, I will be able to bring together
knowledge and skills to help me take advantage of different
leadership styles, situational skills to effectively bring others to
the delivery of care. In the case of management, I will be able
to gather the skills and knowledge of budgetary and resource
allocations, and the interconnection of care between systems.
While these are critical to my professional and academic goals,
I believe I will bring together knowledge and experience in
other areas of NP to improve my NP skills in order to achieve
my goals. The course will help me achieve my MSN degree and
this basically implies that I can get a license as a NP to start
practicing in different challenging environments, preferably in a
hospital, to continue acquiring knowledge and to open on
complex cases as well as direct watch out. I believe that a 3 to 5
year experience will enable me enough to be competent an gain
the skill needed to start my own practice.

INSTRUCTOR’S GRADING CRITERIA/TIMETABLE
All course assignments submitted on time will be graded within
5 days of their due date (the Sunday of the following unit). Late
work will be graded within 5 days of the submission date.
Discussion Board grades will be updated each week no later
than Sunday of the week following the unit’s completion.
COURSE SPECIFIC POLICIES
Seminar Quiz
This course has a Seminar Quiz in lieu of the Alternative
Assignment. After attending the live Seminar or listening to the
transcript, you must complete the Seminar Quiz to earn points
for the Seminar. The quiz must be completed by the last day of
that week’s Unit. The Seminar Quiz will consist of 10 questions
based on the topics that were covered in the Live Seminar. You
will have 30 minutes to take the Quiz and one attempt. Access
the Seminar Quiz in the left navigation bar.
Note: Even if you attend the live Seminar or listen to the
transcript you MUST complete the Seminar Quiz to earn points.
LATE POLICY
You are expected to submit all assignments and projects by the
end of the Unit.
Students may turn in late work up to two weeks after the due
date. After that, a zero will be assigned for each assignment.
Ten percent of the assignment value will be deducted after the
assignment is graded for each week that an assignment is late.
For example, if your assignment worth 100 points is due on
Tuesday and you submit it on Wednesday, 10 points will be
deducted after it is graded. If you submit it two weeks late,
there will be a reduction of 20% of the original assignment
value after the assignment is graded
All late work must be submitted by Sunday of the last unit. No
late work will be accepted after this without an incomplete
grade approval.
4
Certain course activities may not be eligible for late
submission. These include, but are not limited to discussions,
seminars, quizzes, labs, exams, and clinical activities.
We know that extenuating circumstances can interfere with
timely submission of your work. Be sure to tell your professor
and your Education Advisor right away if you are going to be
late with a submission.
Your professor will determine whether an exception to the
Kaplan University Late Policy is appropriate. S/he may also
require you to provide documentation of the reason. If your
professor determines that an extension is warranted, s/he will
provide you with the expectations for your submission or
assignment in writing.
Extenuating circumstances include, but are not limited to,
personal/family member hospitalization, family member death, a
severe weather event, a natural disaster, and an active military
assignment that prevents internet connectivity. Computer-
related issues, Internet connectivity, and account blocks are
generally not considered extenuating circumstances.

SEMINARS
Attending live Seminars is important to your academic success,
and attendance is highly recommended. The Seminar allows you
to review the important concepts presented in each unit, discuss
work issues in your lives that pertain to these concepts, ask
your instructor questions, and allow you to come together in
real time with your fellow classmates. If Seminar is graded, you
must either attend the live Seminar or you must complete the
Seminar alternative assignment (Option 2) in order to earn
points for this part of the class. If Seminars is not graded,
6
you are still encouraged to attend in order to ask questions,
learn about upcoming Assignments, and to interact with your
instructor and classmates.
A description of all Seminars to be held can be found under
each of the units in the course. Option 1: Attend Live Seminar
Live Seminar lasts for one hour. Seminars will be held using the
KHE Seminar tool. You will be provided with instructions on
how to access a recording of the Seminar if you are not able to
attend live. If Seminar is graded, your attendance and
participation during live Seminar will be assessed using the
rubric found in the Course Home.
Option 2: Seminar Alternative Assignment
If Seminar is graded and you are unable to attend the live
Seminar, then be sure to complete the Seminar Alternative
Assignment for each unit. Your responses will be assessed using
the rubric found in the Course Home.
DISCUSSION BOARDS
Discussion topics provide a forum for students to seek
clarification and answer important questions about the course
material. The Discussion also allows students to receive
feedback from the instructor and other students in the class. A
Discussion Board grade will be posted to the Gradebook for
each unit using the following grading criteria.
The Discussion Board Requirement:
· Post a minimum of three posts per Discussion topic. One
initial response and two replies to your classmates.
· Posting on a minimum of 3 different days, for example:
Wednesday, Friday, and Monday
· The first post must be made by Saturday, 11:59 p.m. EST.
7
Participating in Discussion Boards
You will communicate with your professor and classmates using
the Discussion Board areas. This is where you post your
responses to Discussion topics and share your experiences in
completing exercises and applying the content of the course.
Participation in Discussions is required and will help determine
your grade. You are expected to contribute to each of the
Discussion topics in each unit. You should read all responses of
other students and add your own.
During Discussions Boards, you must demonstrate not only that
you understand the subject matter but also that you can apply
what you have learned, analyze it, integrate it with knowledge
you already have, and evaluate it critically. Your postings
should be appropriate and timely contributions that add value to
the Discussion.
Your instructor will provide you more detailed information
about requirements and grading related to participation in
Discussions.
Discussion Guidelines
To ensure your success as a contributor to Discussions and as a
student in this class, we suggest the following guidelines for
posting:
· Be clear about which message you are responding to. Refer to
specific passages or ideas in the course or text that have sparked
your interest.
· Make sure your contribution adds something new to the
Discussion. A simple "I agree" may be your initial response, but
think about how you can take the conversation to the next level.
· Make your posting clear and easy to follow by dividing longer
messages into paragraphs.
· Address classmates by name or user name, and sign your own
messages.
· Feel free to pose new questions to your classmates within your
own message.
· Use correct spelling, capitalization, grammar, syntax, and
punctuation.
· If you plan to post a lengthy response, it is a good idea to type
your response in Word or
NotepadTM, then copy and paste it into the Discussion area.
This way you will always 8
have a record of your communication if for some reason you
lose your connection to the
course.
contact Kaplan University
Student Services.
Sample Question and Answers
The following are some examples of acceptable and
unacceptable responses to Discussion topics:
Unacceptable: "I agree."
Unacceptable: "I think the author is off her rocker on this point.
I can't stand it when techies try
to write about education."
Acceptable: "I agree with Becky W's basic point — that is, I
think she's right that the advent of the Internet means dramatic
changes in how we teach. But I think she's so concerned with
whether technology is going to replace teachers that she misses
an essential point. Teachers must change themselves to use the
Internet effectively. The Internet will never replace teachers and
it will never be a successful tool unless teachers make it one."
Acceptable: "I disagree with Becky W. The Internet has not
changed teaching any more than the printing press changed
teaching, or modern instructional design has changed teaching.
New ideas about teaching and new technologies help us deliver
good teaching more effectively. They may help us understand
more fully what we're delivering. They may help us reach more
students. But the essence of good teaching remains the same."
RUBRICS
A rubric is a tool utilized by your instructor to determine your
performance on assessments (Assignments, Discussions,
Seminars, etc.) throughout your course. The rubric lists the
criteria for the assessment on which you will be graded. You
should follow the rubric so you understand exactly what is
expected of you in each assignment. Following the rubric will
help make sure you do not lose points unnecessarily on any
graded item. The rubrics for this course are contained in the
Grading Rubrics sections of the Course Resources.
9
NETIQUETTE
Interactions in an online classroom are in written form. Your
comfort level with expressing ideas and feelings in writing will
add to your success in an online course. The ability to write is
necessary, but you also need to understand what is considered
appropriate when communicating online.
The word "netiquette" is short for "Internet etiquette." Rules of
netiquette have grown organically with the growth of the
Internet to help users act responsibly when they access or
transmit information online. As a Kaplan University student,
you should be aware of the common rules of netiquette for the
Web and employ a communication style that follows these
guidelines.
· ? Wait to respond to a message that upsets you and be careful
of what you say and how you say it.
· ? Be considerate. Rude or threatening language, inflammatory
assertions (often referred to as "flaming"), personal attacks, and
other inappropriate communication will not be tolerated.
· ? Never post a message that is in all capital letters — it
comes across to the reader as SHOUTING! Use boldface and
italics sparingly, as they can denote sarcasm.
· ? Keep messages short and to the point.
· ? Always practice good grammar, punctuation, and
composition. This shows that you have
taken the time to craft your response and that you respect your
classmates' work.
· ? Keep in mind that Discussion Boards are meant to be
constructive exchanges.
· ? Be respectful and treat everyone as you would want to be
treated yourself.
· ? Use spell check!
You should also review and refer to the Electronic
Communications Policy contained in the most recent Kaplan
University Catalog.

But I think she's so concerned with whether technology is going to replace teachers that she misses an essential point. Teachers must change themselves to use the Internet effectively. The Internet will never replace teachers and it will never be a successful tool unless teachers make it one." Acceptable: "I disagree with Becky W. The Internet has not changed teaching any more than the printing press changed teaching, or modern instructional design has changed teaching. New ideas about teaching and new technologies help us deliver good teaching more effectively. They may help us understand more fully what we're delivering. They may help us reach more students. But the essence of good teaching remains the same."
