ABSTRACT
The researcher adopted pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design to assess the effectiveness of
training programme regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers in
selected auto rickshaw stand beedi workers colony Kengeri, Bangalore. The Auto rickshaw drivers who
fulfill the inclusion criteria were the samples for the study and sample size was 60. Non probability
purposive sampling Technique was used for data collection. The pre-test was conducted followed by the
administration of first aid training programme for 30-45 minutes using lecture cum demonstration scenario,
flash cards and charts after which post test was conducted after a period of 7 days. The finding revealed that
in the pre-test level of knowledge, 49 (81.7%) of auto rickshaw drivers had inadequate knowledge, 11
(18.3%) had moderate knowledge and none of them had adequate knowledge and in the pre-test level of
attitude, 56 (93.3%) had moderately favourable attitude, 4 (6.70%) had favourable attitude. This shows that
the auto rickshaw drivers had inadequate knowledge and attitude in the pre-test before administration of first
aid training programme.
The finding revealed that in the post-test level of knowledge, 28 (46.7%) had moderately knowledge
and 32 (53.3%) had adequate knowledge none of them had inadequate knowledge and in the post test level
of attitude none of them had unfavourable and moderately favourable attitude all of 60 (100%) had
favourable attitude. This shows that the auto rickshaw drivers had adequate knowledge and attitude in the
post test after administration of first aid training programme. There was significant difference between the
pre-test and post-test knowledge and attitude scores with the “t” value which was found to be significant at
P<0.005 level. Hence null hypothesis (H01) was rejected and the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It
provides evidence that the first aid training programme was significantly effective in improving the
knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers
accepted. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and attitude r (r= 0.387) which was
Significant at 5% level (i.e. p<0.05). The association of demographic variables with pre-test level of
knowledge and attitude by the chi-square at the level of p<0.05 for knowledge and attitude respectively and
prove that there was association between pre-test knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on
road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers with their demographic variable.

INTRODUCTION:-
Accident is a major epidemic and non-communicable disease in the present century. The World Health
Organization (WHO) identified road accidents as the “biggest killers” across the world. Globally more than
1.24 million people die each year from road traffic accident and 20-50 million are injured or permanently
disabled annually and every hour 40 people die in road traffic accident around the world. More than 3000
people die on the world's roads every day. Ten millions people are injured or disabled every year.
India has the highest number of road traffic accident in the world. Around 1,30,000 death annually
and every hour 13 people die and every 6 minutes someone dies in a road traffic accident, every 1½
minutes someone is injured and every 1¼ minutes a road traffic accident occurs.8
Road traffic accident are
more common in urban than rural areas. About 30% of all accidents occur in the metropolitan cities of
Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. India’s road has become highways of death. The largest
number of road accident fatalities for the number of vehicles in the world. Almost 100,000 Indians die on
our roads every year in over 300,000 accidents.
Drivers, who have a vital role in delivering the initial care to the accident victims. Every auto
rickshaw drivers who spend most of the time in driving the auto rickshaw. Even minor road accidents will
not be clear without attendance of Drivers. If auto rickshaw Drivers is well equipped with the knowledge of
first aid emergency care, he or she will be able to play an important role in saving the life of accident
victims. The above studies and reviews created an insight in the researcher’s mind that there is a need to
assess the knowledge and attitude among auto rickshaw Drivers regarding first aid management in road
traffic accidents, and to improve quality of life and prevent casualty.
LITERATURE SURVEY
An epidemiological study was conducted on Accident Deaths in Jos, Nigeria. A total of 270 cases of
deaths were reported to the corona for autopsies out of which 45% were accident deaths. Majority 86%
cases were males while 19 cases were females and 60% were in the productive age group of 21-40 years.
Multiple fractures without head injury accounted for 37.7% of deaths, followed by head/upper spinal
injuries 24.6%, crushed body injuries 22%, while, intra-abdominal organ injuries 15.6%. Analysis of types
of accidents showed that vehicle, motorcycle, airplane crash and pedestrian accidents accounted for 59.8%,
20.5%, 10.7% and 9.0% respectively. Information from the Police on motor vehicle accidents, records
showed that 50% of the accidental events were due to dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol.
A cross sectional study was conducted to evaluate socio demographic characteristics, among the
road traffic accident victims admitted in district hospital, Karimnagar. A total of 402 road traffic accident
cases reported to the emergency. A total of 370 road traffic accident victims were interviewed by the end of
study period. The study was conducted from Sep 2011 to August 2012. In this study, it was found that most
of the road traffic accident 192 (52.5%) cases were belonging to the age group of 21-30 years, followed by
96 (26.2%) in age group of 31-40 years and 42 (11.5%) in age group of 11-20 years. Improve the road
traffic sense among road users by health education and First aid management training should be made
compulsorily a part of all drivers.
A study was conducted on road traffic accident in Kolkata, Each year more than 1.2 million people
die in road accident around the World. This paper presents the various aspects of traffic accidents in Kolkata
city in West Bengal, India. Data on accidents were collected from Lal Bazar, Police Head Quarters in the
city for three years (i.e. 2007-’09). It was found that a total 7217 accidents occurred during this period.
Almost 25 per cent victims were between ages 18 to 30 years. Pedestrians are the worst victims of road
accidents and accounted for 17.9 per cent deceased and 82.1 per cent injured. Bus and truck accidents
comprise 21 per cent city road accidents. The analysis results also shown the nature of contributory factors

Mr. Kailash Nagar1 , Mrs. Divyasri D.S 2 1 Assistant Professor, Department of Community Health Nursing, Dinsha Patel College of Nursing, Nadiad, Gujarat, India 2 Assistant Professor, Padmashree Institute of Nursing, Bangalore. ABSTRACT The researcher adopted pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design to assess the effectiveness of training programme regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers in selected auto rickshaw stand beedi workers colony Kengeri, Bangalore. The Auto rickshaw drivers who fulfill the inclusion criteria were the samples for the study and sample size was 60. Non probability purposive sampling Technique was used for data collection. The pre-test was conducted followed by the administration of first aid training programme for 30-45 minutes using lecture cum demonstration scenario, flash cards and charts after which post test was conducted after a period of 7 days. The finding revealed that in the pre-test level of knowledge, 49 (81.7%) of auto rickshaw drivers had inadequate knowledge, 11 (18.3%) had moderate knowledge and none of them had adequate knowledge and in the pre-test level of attitude, 56 (93.3%) had moderately favourable attitude, 4 (6.70%) had favourable attitude. This shows that the auto rickshaw drivers had inadequate knowledge and attitude in the pre-test before administration of first aid training programme. The finding revealed that in the post-test level of knowledge, 28 (46.7%) had moderately knowledge and 32 (53.3%) had adequate knowledge none of them had inadequate knowledge and in the post test level of attitude none of them had unfavourable and moderately favourable attitude all of 60 (100%) had favourable attitude. This shows that the auto rickshaw drivers had adequate knowledge and attitude in the post test after administration of first aid training programme. There was significant difference between the pre-test and post-test knowledge and attitude scores with the “t” value which was found to be significant at P<0.005 level. Hence null hypothesis (H01) was rejected and the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It provides evidence that the first aid training programme was significantly effective in improving the knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers accepted. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and attitude r (r= 0.387) which was Significant at 5% level (i.e. p<0.05). The association of demographic variables with pre-test level of knowledge and attitude by the chi-square at the level of p<0.05 for knowledge and attitude respectively and prove that there was association between pre-test knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers with their demographic variable. KEY WORDS :- KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, FIRST AID MANAGEMENT, ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT, FIRST AID TRAINING PROGRAMME, AUTO RICKSHAW DRIVERS AND AUTO RICKSHAW STANDS.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identified road accidents as the “biggest killers” across the world. Globally more than 1.24 million people die each year from road traffic accident and 20-50 million are injured or permanently disabled annually and every hour 40 people die in road traffic accident around the world. More than 3000 people die on the world's roads every day. Ten millions people are injured or disabled every year. India has the highest number of road traffic accident in the world. Around 1,30,000 death annually and every hour 13 people die and every 6 minutes someone dies in a road traffic accident, every 1½ minutes someone is injured and every 1¼ minutes a road traffic accident occurs.8 Road traffic accident are more common in urban than rural areas. About 30% of all accidents occur in the metropolitan cities of Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. India’s road has become highways of death. The largest number of road accident fatalities for the number of vehicles in the world. Almost 100,000 Indians die on our roads every year in over 300,000 accidents. Drivers, who have a vital role in delivering the initial care to the accident victims. Every auto rickshaw drivers who spend most of the time in driving the auto rickshaw. Even minor road accidents will not be clear without attendance of Drivers. If auto rickshaw Drivers is well equipped with the knowledge of first aid emergency care, he or she will be able to play an important role in saving the life of accident victims. The above studies and reviews created an insight in the researcher’s mind that there is a need to assess the knowledge and attitude among auto rickshaw Drivers regarding first aid management in road traffic accidents, and to improve quality of life and prevent casualty. LITERATURE SURVEY An epidemiological study was conducted on Accident Deaths in Jos, Nigeria. A total of 270 cases of deaths were reported to the corona for autopsies out of which 45% were accident deaths. Majority 86% cases were males while 19 cases were females and 60% were in the productive age group of 21-40 years. Multiple fractures without head injury accounted for 37.7% of deaths, followed by head/upper spinal injuries 24.6%, crushed body injuries 22%, while, intra-abdominal organ injuries 15.6%. Analysis of types of accidents showed that vehicle, motorcycle, airplane crash and pedestrian accidents accounted for 59.8%, 20.5%, 10.7% and 9.0% respectively. Information from the Police on motor vehicle accidents, records showed that 50% of the accidental events were due to dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol. A cross sectional study was conducted to evaluate socio demographic characteristics, among the road traffic accident victims admitted in district hospital, Karimnagar. A total of 402 road traffic accident cases reported to the emergency. A total of 370 road traffic accident victims were interviewed by the end of study period. The study was conducted from Sep 2011 to August 2012. In this study, it was found that most of the road traffic accident 192 (52.5%) cases were belonging to the age group of 21-30 years, followed by 96 (26.2%) in age group of 31-40 years and 42 (11.5%) in age group of 11-20 years. Improve the road traffic sense among road users by health education and First aid management training should be made compulsorily a part of all drivers. A study was conducted on road traffic accident in Kolkata, Each year more than 1.2 million people die in road accident around the World. This paper presents the various aspects of traffic accidents in Kolkata city in West Bengal, India. Data on accidents were collected from Lal Bazar, Police Head Quarters in the city for three years (i.e. 2007-’09). It was found that a total 7217 accidents occurred during this period. Almost 25 per cent victims were between ages 18 to 30 years. Pedestrians are the worst victims of road accidents and accounted for 17.9 per cent deceased and 82.1 per cent injured. Bus and truck accidents comprise 21 per cent city road accidents. The analysis results also shown the nature of contributory factors

The above table-6: depicts association of knowledge regarding first aid management among auto rickshaw drivers with demographic variables of auto rickshaw drivers. In reference to the association of knowledge regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers with demographic variables there was not significant association of knowledge score with their variables. CONCLUSION The study attempted to assess the effectiveness of the first aid training programme regarding first aid management on road accident among auto rickshaw drivers and found that the first aid training programme was effective in increasing knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management among auto rickshaw drivers. The assessment of knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers revealed that the overall mean score was 19.53 and the percentage was 19.5% for knowledge and 62.75 and 62.7% for attitude. Hence, there was adequate knowledge level and favourable attitude of auto rickshaw drivers. The pair t test was carried out and it was found out invariably significant at p<0.05 level, hence null hypothesis (H01) was rejected and the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It provides evidence that the first aid training programme was significantly effective in improving the knowledge and attitude regarding first aid management on road traffic accident among auto rickshaw drivers.
