Harder to Reach – Handle with Care
Raising Awareness
Why some young people struggle to access
mainstream education and present challenging
behaviours.
© K2P 2015
More about the ‘stretch zone’
The ‘stretch zone’ is an exhilarating and energising
place to be for many learners, some however may find
it uncomfortable and even stressful. It is a vital part of
the facilitator’s role to be sensitive to the needs of the
participants and to offer encouragement, support or
alternative roles as necessary.
This is particularly pertinent when working with young
people who experience social, emotional and
behavioural problems.
© K2P 2015
Self-esteem
• Studies have shown that high self-esteem is perhaps
the most important ingredients for behavioural and
academic success.
• Children with Special Needs tend to have lower self-
esteems than average.
• Low self-esteem can make many social, and
academic situations stressful
• Children with low self-esteem can display behaviour
problems through ‘ego-protective’ responses to
threatening situations.

Attachment Theory and
Neuroscience
• Brain development in babies, infants and children
depends on secure attachments with reliable, loving,
significant adults.
• If there are interruptions to absence or abuse of this
relationship many neural pathways essential for the
development of resilience, reciprocity,
resourcefulness and regulation, do not grow or are
‘pruned’.
• Children who have had an interruption in their early
development have a limited ability to regulate their
stress levels and have an over-active alarm system.
© K2P 2015
What does this mean when
delivering K2P?
Young people with low self-esteem and/or attachment
difficulties may find the K2P experience difficult as it
may prompt a stress reaction (a flooding of the body
with stress hormones) which will prevent them
accessing their higher order thinking and may prompt a
FFFF (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Faint) response:
e.g. aggression, messing about, refusal, behaviour to
prompt ejection, unwilling to engage, non-response,
incapability
© K2P 2015
How can K2P facilitators prevent
and remediate ‘dysregulation’?
Some basic strategies to support behavioural
management –
• Use non-threatening direction - ‘pop’.
• Give specific positive feedback and encouragement (acts as a
prompt to others)
• Offer alternative role (then later encourage child to re-join
activity).
• Use positive correction.
• Use proximity support.
• Give ‘take-up’ time.
• Offer temporary escape route (‘bench time’)
© K2P 2015
How does K2P help these
young people?
Repeated restorative activity through play-based and
fun, active learning, facilitated in a contained way by an
empathic, attuned facilitator, generates the ‘feel-good’
chemicals, hormones and neurotransmitters which
support the development of synaptic connections to
create neural networks.
K2P provides an excellent vehicle for these young
people to develop the K2P core values.
