This Findings Paper provides a unique insight into start-up entrepreneurs supported by UnLtd, detailing who they are, their work and the social impact they have. It demonstrates how an investment in the individual and their practical solutions to the problems they face generates a ripple effect with the potential to create significant and lasting social change.
The Rockefeller Foundation has long recognized the importance of meaningful engagement of the private sector in addressing many of the world’s most complex problems. While many social sector leaders understand that engaging the private sector matters, far fewer understand how to do so, or the key questions one should consider before starting down this path of cross-sector collaboration. For instance: Why would a network want to include a company? Or conversely, why would a company want to participate in a network focused on social impact? Can social impact efforts deliver business value? What makes network relationships durable? And ultimately, what are the different needs around accountability, leadership, governance and mindset? To answer questions such as these, The Foundation and our partners at Monitor Institute, a part of Deloitte Consulting LLP, have created “PARTICIPATE: The power of involving business in social impact networks”—a handbook for social change leaders aspiring to effectively engage the private sector as authentic participants in the pursuit of social impact.

On September 4, 2014, Bogdan Prokopovych and Davis Plotnieks from Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE), Stockholm School of Economics delivered a presentation of the SEFORIS project in International Summer School on Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainability in Emerging Markets, Tbilisi State University, Georgia.
Presentation explained aims and benefits of SEFORIS project, research trends in social entrepreneurship and an integrated framework of research for social entrepreneurship and its financing modes. Bogdan and Davis presented examples how academic research can help practitioners and researchers understand the complex field of social entrepreneurship and social finance.
International Summer School was dedicated to social entrepreneurship topics where students from 18 different countries from Europe, Asia and North America acquired knowledge on social entrepreneurship, social finance and social innovation. Participants also discussed different business models and case studies of social entrepreneurship from their countries. During International Summer School students worked as business consultants for Georgian social entrepreneurs providing them recommendations for their business model improvement.
The SEFORIS project is a multi-disciplinary, multi-method international research project on social enterprise funded by the European Commission. SEFORIS aims to better understand the role that social enterprises play in the EU and beyond in the development of and evolution towards inclusive and innovative societies.
SITE is a leading research and policy center on transition in the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe. In SEFORIS project SITE is responsible of different funding and financing mode research of social entrepreneurship.

Social enterprises are innovative businesses that address the long-term needs of our world. Social enterprises can be structured in several ways – non-profit, for-profit or hybrid. Echoing Green, a seed-stage funder of social enterprises has seen an increase in applications of both for-profit and hybrid models. An emerging trend for hybrid social enterprises is building a for-profit and non-profit arm of the social enterprise that furthers the organization’s social agenda. The social enterprise sector in the United States is estimated to be double the size of the mining industry and three to five percent of the United States total gross domestic product. The social enterprise movement soared in 2006 with sixty percent of today’s social enterprises founded after 2006. Social enterprises are tackling the world’s problems. Last year, poverty alleviation and economic development were the top program areas for hybrid and for-profit funding applicants. As the social enterprise sector continues to grow, a trend we see more of is more defined social and/or environmental impact. Tom Shoes, a well-known social enterprise, has received much media attention and criticism of their business structure. Not only has TOMS learned from the criticism but it has assisting in building structures for other social enterprises.
Funding is often referred to as an obstacle for social enterprises. New funding sources are allowing social enterprises the ability to be original and ground-breaking in their funding pursuit. Social enterprises are trending worldwide; something is happening in every corner of the world regarding social enterprises. Consumers are willing to match their wallets and hearts when it comes to spending money with social enterprises. Based on the activities of stakeholders, entrepreneurs, investors, governments, media and consumers, we should continue to see the movement of social enterprises advance.

into start-up entrepreneurs supported by UnLtd,
detailing who they are, their work and the social
impact they have. It demonstrates how an
investment in the individual and their practical
solutions to the problems they face generates
a ripple effect with the potential to create
significant and lasting social change.

2. Introduction
Social entrepreneurship is an area of rapid and sustained growth. There are an increasing number of advocates for social enterprise, with the
launch of the Social Enterprise Mark and growing recognition of organisations such as The Big Issue, Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Fifteen, and the
fair-trade chocolate company, Divine Chocolate, to name only a few. However, comparatively little attention has been given to the 238,000
people found by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor to be starting a social venture in the UK (Harding and Harding 2008). Moreover, social
entrepreneurship has been offered as a solution to many of the social and environmental problems faced in the UK’s post-recession
economic climate, placing high hopes on individual social entrepreneurs. As such, it is important to understand more about what social
entrepreneurship can do, socially, environmentally and politically.
UnLtd’s mission is to reach out and unleash the energies of those individuals who can transform the world in which they live; supporting
individuals who have passion, ideas and a can-do attitude to set up and run a social venture. Whether the problem they tackle is local or societal,
UnLtd sees this potential for social change in ordinary people with practical solutions. UnLtd has direct contact with start up social entrepreneurs
through the support and funding provided, creating a unique perspective into the facts about social entrepreneurship.

4. What are social
entrepreneurs doing?

benefited the local community and 38% benefited a particular
group of people. This finding reflects the SEC (2009) survey where
these two categories were again the most popular (59% and 36%
respectively), with employees, other organisations and the
environment targeted to a lesser extent.
When asked the more specific question ‘What, if any, particular
groups of people in your community do you benefit?’, the majority
of Award Winners benefited local people, young people under
18, people on low incomes, unemployed people and people with
disabilities, as shown in Figure 1. Again, the groups targeted by
UnLtd social entrepreneurs directly mirror those found more
generally in social enterprise by the SEC (2009). It is also
noteworthy that social entrepreneurs were targeting an average
of 5 groups of people in their communities.

5. What impact do they have?
UnLtd primarily funds start-up social entrepreneurs, providing mass support for people creating micro scale projects. Some of these are designed
to run for a short time to successfully address an issue. Others continue after their UnLtd Award and become viable businesses, often operating as
social enterprises. In other words, social entrepreneurs often start small scale, whether they are addressing a problem in their community, an issue
that they have personally experienced or a more general social concern. However, start-up social entrepreneurs still create significant social and
economic impacts.

7. The ripple effect
Conclusions
UnLtd aims first and foremost to invest in social entrepreneurs who are
at a very early stage in their work, with the belief that this initial act of
