Fritz and Laura Perls were the founders of Gestalt therapy. Fritz failed 7th grade twice but later earned his medical degree and served as a medic in WWI. He established the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. Gestalt therapy aims to help clients integrate conflicting parts of themselves through awareness exercises done in the present moment. Therapeutic experiments are used to intensify experiencing, such as having clients stay with unpleasant feelings or role play opposing parts of their personality. The goal is for clients to gain awareness, make choices, take responsibility, and integrate themselves.
