This document provides planning details for a digital graphic narrative project. It includes sections on costs, available resources, quantity, audience, quality factors, codes of practice, regulations, copyright, ethics, resources, production schedule, and health and safety. The student considers each element in detail to fully plan their project. They estimate costs for printing, list software and hardware resources, set a target print quantity of a couple hundred copies, and define their target audience as children aged 6 to 8 years old. Their production schedule outlines tasks to be completed across 10 sessions. Health and safety risks like tripping on wires are also addressed.
1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
As we are to imagine this as a live project, to be actually creating a book to be sold to the public, lots of costs
could be involved. As we have our own software that help us create this book e.g. I m using Photoshop then
no costs would be needed for this part of the production. The part of the project that would cost the most when
creating this book would be printing. Depending on the quantity of books I would want to produce would
depend on the amount of money spent as printing can cost a lot of money for the ink and paper.
Available resources:
I have many available resources as I am creating the book on a computer and they have a lot of software
available to help. The computer in itself is a resource I can easily access on here is the software Photoshop
which I am using a lot, it also has the internet which helps for research and idea, text and images I can
change. If I am to change my mind somewhere through the project and do some drawing it is easy for me to
find pens, pencils, paper etc and I can get hold of a scanner really easily to be able to put this image on the
compute. I could also get a camera relatively easy if I decided I would want to start taking photographs for
certain parts of the book.
2. Quantity:
When I have previously researched in the book I am creating (The boy who cried wolf) I found that it has been
recreated many times therefore being a really popular book/fairytale. Many people have heard about it as
when I have spoken about the book nobody has asked me what it is about. As this is such a popular, well-known
and likable book I would create around a good couple hundred copies. I think it would sell really well
but in consideration there has been many made before and are being sold on the internet and in shops
therefore a lot of competition is around. I wouldn’t create thousands, as it is very unpredictable as to how
many would be sold due to the amount of recreated books. In my opinion a couple of hundred copies would
be the acceptable amount,
Audience and Target Market:
I have previously researched and looked in to my audience/target market therefore I know a lot about them. I
would aim my book to be directed at children between the ages of 6 years – 8 as at this age they can ask their
parents/carers to buy the book for them, as it would appeal to those children. This book is directed to any
gender as it is a messaged book (to not tell lies because nobody believes a liar), this is also why I have
chosen this specific book as at a young age children have wild imagination and like to make things up that
elders (parents/carers etc) would sometimes believe. The book is written in English so anyone who speaks
the British language e.g. UK, America, Norway, Australia, countries in Europe who speak this langue etc can
read it so it’s aimed to a very wide audience so therefore not being a religious book in any type or having
anything to do with ethnicity. It Is not aimed at any class so the lower, middle and upper class can all buy and
read this book and although it is aimed at the years of 6 – 8 it could be read and shown to children below or
above that specific age.
Quality Factors:
How I could make my book as good as it possibly could be is more of a personal answer rather than e.g. what
resources I have to help me. This is all down to how well I cooperate with my work. If I am wanting the best
outcome I can achieve I will have to keep at my work without getting distracted or distracting others, to be
effective with time, be on time or early and not miss any days or hours as this could put me further behind
than expected. Sticking to my plans would be best as I then know what I’m doing and I don’t have to stray
away from this and get confused or struggle. Regularly checking my pages could help a lot to make sure they
look similar and how I have planned them out to be, if they were to look different this could complicate things
and confuse children.
3. Codes of Practice:
If I were to have a contract with a publisher I would have to follow and consider the information and rules
within the contract. These are:
Time – I would have to have my book ready to be published in the specific time I have been told or have
agreed to with the publisher.
Standards and quality – The book would need to meet the standards I have shown and mentioned it would, to
not be poor quality work and have specific aspects within it e.g. the story line would need to be the same as
what was agreed.
Defamation or illegality – The book cannot be offensive in any way or damage/ruin the good reputation of a
person or persons and there is to be allowed no illegal text, images etc that would be included in a book.
If any of the above are found within the book or do not meet the needs of the publisher or I, the contract can
be terminated and the person not at fault can refuse to publish the book.
Regulation:
A book and a toy are two different things but as had been made before and present the two can be combined
e.g. to have pop-up books or touch and feel with different material, there are books that have hand and finger
puppets with them etc. I have made a standard book with just text and pictures. I have done this due to the
reasons that there could be many problems to occur with creating a book with toys for such a young audience
which would consist of hazards such as small parts with the cause of choking etc. If I were to include a toy in
my work I would have to run through a toy safety directives document and to have it looked at by people who
specialise in this. It would also have to be looked at by people who specialise in the obscene act to make sure
everything would be up to standard and safe. This doesn’t apply to me and is a lot simpler to do just the
standard text and picture book.
Copyright:
Copyright is the act of taking or using someone else’s work within your own. When making money it becomes
very serious as people are paying the person who has stolen someone else’s work rather than paying the
person who created the work. An example of this that I could have used would be some of the text I could use
of a website called daFont. I have researched in to these different types of text for what I would like to use to
make my book look a lot more appealing but there are restrictions. Some of the text on the website costs
money therefore paying the creator to use their work so this is legal but if it is not paid for this is illegal and is
classed as copyright. Other work on this website is free and open to the public therefore not needing to pay
for it and it is legal to use this in our work with no need to pay the creator as they are giving it away.
4. Ethical Issues:
This is quite a big issue to consider what creating a book especially for a young audience. There are three
different things to look at when talking about this issue and these are
Cultural sensitivity – How something within the book can offend or be a sensitive subject to a person/persons
Decency – The topics/story within the book needs to be appropriate to my specific audience
Representation – How someone or something is seen in a particular way.
These all apply to my book but the two that stand out the most are Cultural sensitivity and representation. As
the original ending to The boy who cried wolf was that the sheep and/or the boy got eaten, I had to change
this as it was graphic and for a young audience this is not suitable. This would come under cultural sensitivity
as this could be a delicate subject or matter to certain people, possibly the elders who are reading the book
and find it wrongly to mistreat animals or kill them at all, these elders would most probably not want their
young children knowing that this happens or for them to imagine it happening. Another issue that could have
taken place within my book would have come under representation, this is because all the characters in the
original book were men. The villagers who worked all day were men and a few decades ago this was how
things went and how people lived but I am creating a modern book and it would be nice to include some
women villagers who work to include the equality act and show youngsters that it’s fine for women to
undertake jobs that a few decades ago only men were allowed to do.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
5. Computer/laptop Yes
I have this at college and at home so it is very easily
accessible. I need this to continue and to finish my work and as I
have both college and home surroundings to do this, I shouldn’t
fall behind with any work.
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Yes
Again I have this at both home and college so it is easily
accessible I just need to take my work on a memory stick from
one place to the other to make sure I have a copy of the
updated version always and can carry on where I left off last.
Internet Yes
I only really need this for research and I’ve done most of it but
just to be sure. I do have this again at both home and school so
if I need anything I can access it as soon as possible.
Storyboard and Mood board Yes
I have my storyboard complete on my college computer and I
can put it on my memory stick if I need to have a look at it to
open it up on my laptop at home.
My mood board is on my memory stick and is as complete as it
can possibly be, I can put this on my home laptop or on my
college computer.
Flat plans Yes
These are on my college computer. I will need these just like
the mood board, storyboard and script so all will be on my
memory stick and all is complete so there will be no need to
update them.
Script Yes
My script for the book is on the college computer but is simple
enough to put it on my memory stick and take it with me home
to make sure I have the final copy of it so I get all spelling and
grammar right and the story Is correct.
Camera No
I have decided that I may have to take some of my own
photographs if I cannot find something I am specifically
researching. I will need the camera and to get this I will have to
book one out from the office for a day or two.
6. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Tue. 9th. 9:00 – 10:30
I have previously created my Shepherd so he is complete already, nothing needs to happen to him. I will
create my villagers on Photoshop. I have three of these and in an hour and half I should have created at
least two good quality characters. They all have at least two different emotions so I will have to recreate
the facial expressions on each. I will do this after I have created my original characters first.
Tue. 9th. 10:50 – 12:20
I will finish the final villager. When I have done this I should still have time to spare so I will move on the
other facial expressions of the villagers and complete them.
Session 2:
Wed. 10th. 9:00 – 2:40
As i have created my characters on Photoshop using the rotoscoping technique and or shape task I will
most likely carry this on and create my backgrounds. There is a lot any many different scenes so this will
most likely take up the whole day.
7. Session 3:
Thur. 11th. 1:10 – 4:20
I should have now created all my characters and the background for them but i still have the animals to
create these are the sheep and the wolf.
These will most probably take up the rest of the day to create decent/up to standard animals especially
as the wolf needs to look different in each scene.
Session 4:
8. Fri.12. 9:00 – 12:20
As i have now created all my characters and the background i will start on the first page which will
include text and placing the correct characters on the correct part of the background in the scene. This
will take quite a while as i will need to get my text correct, my characters placed correct and make sure
everything is up to standard.
Session 5:
Sat. 13th.
I will update anything that i think i may fall behind on therefore maybe creating an extra page on this
weekend day, this will be my second page in the book.
9. Session 6:
Sun. 14.
I will create my third page on this day and again update anything i feel that needs doing.
Session 7:
Tue.15. 9:00 – 10:30
By now i should know what i am doing and things should all be in order therefore being able to create
my fourth page and not taking as long. I will merge my characters on to the background and again this
will all be done through Photoshop.
10:50 – 12:20
I will create my fifth page by doing the exact same thing as i have previously (in the last half an hour) as
I know what I’m doing this should be much simpler.
10. Session 8:
Wed. 16. 9:00 – 10:30
I will create my sixth page of my book and as should now be half way through the project, i will do this
over this hour and a half and I will do the exact same as i previously have. I will start to use different
facial features for the villagers.
10:50 – 12:20
Creating my seventh page of the book if everything is going to schedule and be using more facial
featured characters as I am now getting in to the story.
Session 9:
Thurs. 17th 1:10 – 2:40
I will be on my eighth page by now adding more characters to my background and a lot more text.
2:50 – 4:20
I should now be on my eighth page but as i could be running late so i could do more at home by putting
my updated work on to my memory stick and finishing a lot of it off. As i should know very well what i’m
doing i should be able to create more than one page within an hour and a half therefore being able to
create at least 3 in a college day (3 hours) At the end of this day i should have created my tennth page.
Using Photoshop and all the skills and techniques i have previously spoken about that I shall undertake.
11. Session 10:
Fri. 18th. 9:00 – 10:30
I will create my eleventh and twelfth page in this hour and a half being nearly done and checking that all
my pages look similar so there is no confusion and it looks presentable, without any mistakes.
10: 50 – 12:20
If all has gone to plan on this time schedule i should be creating my final page being my thirteenth
through Photoshop with all the previous skills and techniques i have spoken about that i would have
used. I will compare all pages to see if there are any mistakes etc. If everything is done then i will have
finished on time which will work out perfectly.
12. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
13. Tripping over a scattered wire (most probably to charge a
laptop)
Make sure all wires and leads are tucked away and to not
have them trailing across the floor therefore preventing
any hazards that could cause trips.
Spilling any liquid or food on a compute/laptop
Make sure no food or drink is brought in to the work place
and if it is then it should be well kept out of the electronics
way.
Damaging eye sight/getting bad head pains
Don’t be sitting too close to the devise (laptop, computer
etc) and be taking regular breaks (5 minutes each hour or
the 10 – 20 minute break in college)
Bad back pain
Make sure to zoom in to certain aspects on the
application on the computer/laptop rather than leaning
extremely close to close to it creating back pain.
