Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a prominent Spanish painter born in 1863 in Valencia. He excelled in painting portraits, landscapes, and scenes depicting social and historical themes. Sorolla received his early art education in Valencia and Madrid, and later studied for four years in Rome, Italy, where he was influenced by other Spanish painters working there. He was especially influenced by his exposure to modern French painting in Paris in 1885. Sorolla is renowned for his mastery of capturing light and atmosphere, especially in his depictions of scenes in his native Spain.
