Jisc trust and identity update

The KPSN (Kent Public Sector Network) partnership provides shared network services to public sector organizations in Kent. It has implemented Govroam, an open standard for secure wireless roaming, allowing over 30,000 staff across 16 organizations to access the internet and resources seamlessly. Implementation began in 2016 with a pilot and has expanded to over 400 sites. Govroam supports collaboration and remote working across organizations like health, education, emergency services, and local authorities. Next steps include further expansion, public Wi-Fi access, and contingency planning like reciprocal agreements for situations like Brexit.

Jisc Monitor workshop - Jo Lambert and Brian Mitchell - Jisc Digital Festival...

The Jisc APC pilot project aimed to respond to a changing global Open Access (OA) landscape by exploring key issues around the management of article processing charges. By bringing together representatives from academic institutions, publishers, funders and intermediaries, the project explored different approaches to managing Article Processing Charges (APCs) and investigated opportunities for achieving greater efficiencies. The project indicated that Open Access publishing activity must be considered in its entirety to deliver maximum efficiencies within an institutional context. Following the pilot project, Jisc OA Monitor aims to provide a shared service enabling institutions to collate, analyse and report on all of its Open Access publishing activities and outputs (Green and Gold) both internally and to its funders. The service will offer institutions an insight into their degree of compliance with funder mandates and encourage international co-operation to assist in the development of processes, systems and standards that facilitates the sharing and exchange of relevant information between institutional, publisher and vendor systems. An overview of Jisc OA Monitor outlining its core components. Community engagement and co-design is a key aspect of Jisc OA Monitor and the workshop will enable participants to contribute ideas to inform development of this new service.

Stakeholder strategic update webinar - further education and skills

Jisc provides digital services and infrastructure to UK education. In the past year, Jisc doubled bandwidth on its Janet network to 400Gbps to keep up with increasing traffic and data volumes. Jisc also helped members reduce costs through sector-wide deals that achieved £125 million in savings and held annual price increases to under 3% for major publishers. Additionally, Jisc launched new services to help members improve the student experience through learning analytics, assess digital capabilities, and better prepare for GDPR compliance while continuing to support research through shared repositories and data services.

Jisc's international strategy

Jisc aims to enhance the globalization of UK higher education and further education through five key strategies by 2019: 1) focusing products in areas that make the most difference, 2) becoming a recognized partner to further education, 3) strengthening their position supporting UK research, 4) growing their international offering, and 5) mirroring the sector's shift towards integration. The international strategy has three strategic priorities: 1) supporting members globally, 2) utilizing expertise to generate income internationally, and 3) maintaining leadership and partnerships globally. Specific objectives include understanding members' international needs, developing globally relevant services, exporting UK expertise, and increasing engagement with international organizations.

Stakeholder strategic update 2021 - Scotland

Jisc held a strategic update meeting for stakeholders in Scotland on December 8, 2021. The agenda included presentations from Paul Boyle, vice chancellor of Swansea University and Jisc chair, on reviewing the last twelve months. Jason Miles-Campbell, head of Jisc Scotland, provided nation-specific highlights. Heidi Fraser-Krauss, Jisc CEO, looked ahead to upcoming priorities. Nicola Arnold, Jisc CFO, gave a finance update. Robin Ghurbhurun and Liam Earney then provided sector updates on further education/skills and higher education/research respectively. The meeting concluded with a question and answer session.

Campus network refresh - Networkshop44

The University of Dundee underwent a campus network refresh and IT restructuring project. The goals were to replace aging network infrastructure, improve wireless access and performance, reduce complexity, and improve security. A tender process was used to select a new vendor. The selected solution involved switching, software-defined networking, firewalls, and wireless access points to provide a modernized network across campus. The project has been progressing on time according to updates published online and through social media.

The way forward together

The speaker thanks the audience for their feedback and discusses Jisc's progress and aspirations. While Jisc has come a long way, it still has further progress to make to meet stakeholder expectations. The speaker aims to make Jisc a world-class organization that provides valued digital support and transformation services to UK education and research communities. Feedback from stakeholders is needed to help Jisc understand what services should be improved or discontinued. The speaker expresses confidence that Jisc can justify stakeholder investments by adding real value.
