Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 in Alabama. She had a difficult childhood, being homeschooled until age 11 and having to drop out of school to care for her mother. On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, leading to her arrest. This act of defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped launch the Civil Rights Movement. Parks received several honors for her activism, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Award. She died on October 24, 2005 in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 92.
