Rosa Parks was an African American civil rights activist born in 1913 who refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. As a result of her arrest, the Montgomery Bus Boycott ensued, lasting over a year and helping to launch the Civil Rights Movement. She came to be known as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement."
