Piaget studied how knowledge develops in individuals and identified four stages of cognitive development from birth to adolescence: the sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operational stage, and formal operations stage. He also proposed two processes of cognitive functioning - assimilation, where new experiences are integrated into existing cognitive structures, and accommodation, where cognitive structures change to fit new experiences and resolve disequilibrium caused by inconsistencies between schemas and reality.
