Cognitive Stages of
development

 Jean Piaget
Piaget’s four cognitive stages.
Key points of the theory
 Piaget perceived that children think very differently from adults.
 He felt children were active learners and did not need motivation from
adults to learn.
 Piaget believed that children were constructing new knowledge as they
moved through different cognitive stages or schema, building on what they
already knew.
 children interpret this knowledge differently as they progress through
different stages.
Classroom implications
 What the teacher does under this theory (with and without technology)
 The teacher would understand in which stage of development the student
is to use technology. Example, the teacher would not give a computer to a
2 year old kid.
 Without technology, the teacher would need to evaluate the student, in
other ways. Example, the teacher would use pen and paper to work with
the student and results can take longer.
Classroom implications
 What the students do under this theory (with and without technology)
 Students starting at age 2 can understand pictures, numbers, and symbols.
Which means that students can work with technology starting at that age.
 Students can learn with hands on and without technology, they can
accomplish other task and technology would not increase or decrease
their learning experience.

What you think about the theory for
your own teaching
 Piaget’s four cognitive stages, made me realized that I would love to work
with kids during the their first 2 stages. The first stage sensorimotor is when
learning takes place primarily through the motor actions and object
permanence (“out of sight, out of mind”.) and the second stage
Preoperational, 2-7 years old the child is intuitive, curious, and can
communicate using pictures numbers and symbols. But there need to be
irreversibility to move to the next stage,
