This document summarizes the vision, achievements, innovations, problems faced, leveraging of funds, and further scope of an irrigation project in Purulia, West Bengal between 2008-2012. The vision was to graduate 10,000 families out of poverty through year-long food sources and income. By 2012, the project had benefited 1,243 families, irrigated 725 acres in kharif season and 325 acres in rabi season. Total investment was 44.98 lakhs rupees yielding a 38% return in the first year. Innovations included using small water bodies and pumps to expand irrigation. Problems involved equitable water distribution. Leveraging other funds and further crop planning were seen as opportunities to expand

cash in a year.

sufficiency mainly SC and ST.

(kharif and other season).

4. Total 8 schemes operationalised with a cost of 44.98
lakhs rupees (including salary and OH)
725 acres of irrigated kharif paddy created.
325 acres of rabi crop cultivated.
1243 families benefited.
Additional kharif income – 1000 rupees an acre so 6
lakhs rupees a year.
Additional rabi income – 3000 rupees an acre so 9
lakhs rupees.
17 lakhs rupees 38% return on investment in the first
year.
It will increase as SRI coverage in kharif and rabi will
increase phenomenally in the command area from
next year.

5. Innovations
• Small water bodies in the command area are
filled with water from DBI and will be used
afterwards.
• Pumps are used from small dug well near the
DBI outlet to irrigate areas outside the
command area.
• Delivery pipes are used from the outlet to
take water to the higher plots.
• When water level getting lower than the
intake level then pump is used and system is
used as lift irrigation.

6. Problems faced
• Water distribution in the command area
– Detailed command area map prepared and
also ownership map prepared then committee
formed to distribute water.
– Outlets are locked.
• Command area is getting increased
people are taking water by making earthen
channel.

7. Leveraging fund
• Joint collaboration with panchayat
– Enough enthusiasm created.
– People demanding DBI
– Possibility of converting the labor component in
NREGA and also the intake structure.
– Only pipe cost will be required.
– In some cases whole amount can be generated.
– Paschimanchal Unnayan Parishad visited our
sites.
– Officers of Agri Irrigation department also visited
our sites.

8. Further scope
• Detailed crop planning.
• Water can be utilized better with proper
crop plan.
• Conservation of water in the command
area for use in winter and summer in
the fringes of command area.
