Building intelligent APIs - Andy Thurai, IBMPAPIs.io
The birth of a sophisticated Internet of Things has catapulted hybrid data collection, which mixes structured and unstructured data, to new heights. The goal with any analytics software is to find and improve better data sets rather than spending time in identifying, prepping, cleaning, and preparing the data. Not only is predicting and prescribing an action anticipating a future issue desired, but if the action is ignored then a forward thinking automatic adoption should suggest an advanced course correction based on previous action items not acted upon. Predictive analytics algorithms should recalibrate themselves. As the incoming data evolves, so do the algorithms – they must re-fit, re-predict and re-prescribe.
Andy Thurai, Program Director at IBM (API, IoT and Connected Cloud), discusses how the time has come for machines and humans to work together to make each other smarter. The combination of APIs, IoTs, big data, smarter analytics, and cognitive computing is transforming the way we see the future — and more importantly, what we do about it.

The emergence of the mobile workforce has left an indelible mark on the enterprise; every employee is now mobile, and business data continues to be dispatched to the far reaches of the enterprise. While this has added enormous opportunity for increased productivity, it has also muddied the waters when it comes to controlling and protecting valuable data assets. As companies quickly evolve to address the new set of challenges posed by this shift in data usage, IT must ensure that all data, no matter where it’s generated or stored, is available and governed just as if it were still safely behind the corporate firewall.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Malcolm Chisholm as he explains the myriad challenges that mobile data introduces when addressing regulations and compliance needs, requiring new approaches to data governance. He’ll be briefed by Dave Packer of Druva, who will outline his company’s converged data protection strategy, which brings data center class capabilities to backup, availability and governance for the mobile workforce. He will share strategies to meet regional data residency, data recovery, legal hold and eDiscovery requirements and more.

Cloud Computing for Nonprofits - What's Microsoft Got?George Durham
Are you wondering what the cloud has to offer your organization, and why you should care? Or maybe you’re thinking about how to more seamlessly integrate your cloud with your existing on-premise infrastructure? Or how to take advantage of software donations you may already have from Microsoft while still exploring cloud computing?
Join us to learn more about Microsoft’s vision for Software plus Services, a view that recognizes we can’t always have our mission-critical applications and data dependent on Internet access. See what’s available today and what’s around the corner. From the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) to Azure to Office 2010, Microsoft’s offerings have the potential to enable nonprofit organizations to spend less time and money running their IT infrastructure so they can spend more time delivering on their missions.
We’ll share examples from organizations already using Microsoft’s cloud services and tell you about donations and discount programs for nonprofits. Product demonstrations and overviews will include Microsoft’s Online Services (Exchange Online, Exchange Hosted Services, SharePoint Online, Office Live Meeting, Dynamics CRM Online, Office Communications Online).
The term cloud computing is being used more and more, but what is it and why should you understand it? In this free webinar we will explain what cloud computing means, define the different types, discuss how it is impacting nonprofits and libraries, and outline some criteria for use. The challenges of using the “cloud” will be discussed, as well as whether cloud computing will simplify your life and reduce software and IT staffing costs.
Hear from Anna Jaeger, Co-Director, GreenTech at TechSoup Global, and Peter Campbell, Nonprofit Technologist at Earthjustice, who will help you understand this topic in order to better communicate with your consultants, staff and board. This webinar is applicable for any size organization and ideal for decision makers who need to communicate about cloud computing with tech consultants, and who are interested in making more informed technology decisions.
Should you migrate to Google Apps or not? How can you decide? What questions should you ask?
Two cases are presented--in one a medium-sized foundation migrates to Google Apps and in the other, a medium-sized nonprofit migrates to Microsoft BPOS.
Brighttalk converged infrastructure and it operations management - finalAndrew White
How Converged Infrastructure Will Change IT Operations Management
Over the past decade, Enterprises have leveraged a shared service model to make IT more cost effective. The emergence of “Converged Infrastructure” and “Fabric-Based Infrastructure” will allow IT to offer purpose driven solutions rather than the function driven solutions of the past. To do this, IT will need to evolve towards more modular designs, rely more on open standards, and rethink their approach to management frameworks.
In this session you will learn:
How converged infrastructure is used to create purpose driven solutions
Why new operational challenges are faced as this new approach is used broadly
What changes need to occur to succeed with this new paradigm
SaaS has transformed your business. The numbers say you’re running at least 4 apps today, powering everything from Sales to Operations to IT. SaaS delivers agility.
So why would you need to monitor Salesforce.com, NetSuite, Marketo, or Office365? The more you run on SaaS, the more your business resiliency is dependent on actionable performance insight.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

52. Strategy Section 6: Databases
and Trackers
• As your company grows, you can’t keep
everything in your head or email
– “Your head is for having ideas, not for
holding them” – David Allen
• You’ll want to track critical information
somehow using spreadsheets, Google
Sheets, databases, SharePoint lists, or
something similar
• Things you may want to track:
– Projects (Who is assigned to which project?)
– IT Equipment (Who has which laptop, and
when does their warranty run out?)
– IT Access (Who has what level of access to
what Business Systems?)
– Software Licenses (How many copies of
Microsoft Office do we own? Who has
Adobe Acrobat Professional?)

55. Top IT 101 Tips
1. Make a strategy first, before you buy technology – every
decision affects your future IT infrastructure
2. Look for answers and explanations on CIO, technology, social
websites, like Quora, YouTube, Lifehacker, Spiceworks, and
CIO.com
3. Don’t always pick the cheapest option – consider if this
solution will be able to grow with your company
4. Read books and blogs to learn best practices (but don’t let
that get in the way of running your business)
5. If it makes sense, consider paying for outsourced IT support
(Managed Service Provider) so you can focus on your
company
6. Connect with people who have IT experience at bigger
organizations (e.g. Meetups, Professional Organizations,
former colleagues)
56. Resources to Analyze Business Systems
Yourself
• Gartner Magic Quadrants (Google
“[Business System Type]
Magic Quadrant” – you can also
try adding “filetype:pdf” to the
end of the search string (top-right is
“best”)
• Check websites like Quora,
Lifehacker, and CIO.com for advice
• Asking colleagues and peers about
their experience
