NOSA’s very own Head of Innovation, Dr Deonie Botha, deliberated the fact that the business environment is complex in nature and that organisations need to function like complex adaptive systems to be robust and ensure long-term sustainability. ISO 45001 emphasises a multitude of technical and non-technical factors, which organisations need to manage in order to ensure compliance. However, Deonie also highlighted how it will also serve as a tool to assist organisations in being robust and ensuring sustainability.

The new standard is designed to help organisations around the world ensure the health and safety of the people who make their business possible.
This standard is set to replace the popular OHSAS 18001 standard, with the overall purpose remaining the improvement of occupational health and safety performance. ISO 45001 will more easily integrate with other ISO Management Systems standards including ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
ISO 45001 will require an organization to look beyond its immediate health and safety issues and take into account what the wider society expects of it. Organisations will have to think about their contractors and suppliers, as well as the effects their activities have on neighbouring communities.
As globalisation and global trade continue to escalate, organisations’ stakeholders are expecting organisations to be ethical in every aspect of their business, especially in the way they treat employees. ISO 45001 will give organisations an internationally recognised occupational health and safety standard to follow. This standard provides the specification for formal, systematic analysis and management of risk, management of regulatory compliance, promotion of safer work practices, and evaluation of occupational health and safety performance. This systematic approach facilitates a decrease in the number of incidents and ultimately less disruption to business.
In order to comply with international needs and requirements, more than 50 countries and organisations including the International Labour Organization (ILO) have been involved in the creation of ISO 45001. The aim is to provide a tool that can be used by any organisation, in any industry, anywhere in the world.
Organisations currently certified to OHSAS 18001, can remain so through the transition period offered after the publication of the ISO 45001 standard.
ISO 45001 is the world’s international standard for occupational health and safety, issued to protect employees and visitors from work-related accidents and diseases. ISO 45001 certification was developed to mitigate any factors that can cause employees and businesses irreparable harm.
Its standards are the result of great effort by a committee of health and safety management experts who looked closely at a number of other approaches to system management — including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In addition, ISO 45001 was designed to take other existing occupational health and safety standards, such as OHSAS 18001, into account — as well as the ILO’s labor standards, conventions and safety guidelines.
This implementation guide will help you run through the benefits, PDCA Cycle, Annex SL structure in detail for implementing ISO 45001.

The more an organization is open to accepting change; the more it is likely to stay ahead of the race. The opposite is equally true. The more the competition, the greater should be the urge to accept change for the simple reason that if you don’t accept change, your competition will do so more quickly than you!

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

3. § The new ISO 45001:2018 standard for Occupational health and safety is now an ISO
standard unlike previous version OHSAS 18001 standard. Its core text remains
similar to ISO 9001:2015 standard and other ISO standards having 10 clauses.
§ OH&S standard focuses that Leadership must involve workers for consultation and
participation to build safety culture. This implies everyone in an organization is a
worker and shall participate in promoting safety culture.
§ Each and every worker shall be competent enough to identify hazards. Standard
makes training element very robust for development of employees.Trainings must
exhibit addition of skill for identification of hazard. It implies now organizations
must invest in employees and online trainings are not sufficient as it has its own
limits. Many debate that online trainings are sufficient. If that’s the case then our
school/ university education system must have also moved to online mechanism.
But it has not because there is a difference between skill enhancement and
awareness. This standard beautifully focuses on same.
4. § Addition of “Evaluation of Compliance clause” indicates legal department audit is
mandatory now. As per companies act and factories act in India all legal compliances
are mandatory. Legal department audit is a mandatory to exhibit transparency in
implementation of laws in the organization. This is an additional clause apart from
legal and other requirement clauses.
§ Last but not the least the old word HIRA is now HIRA DC which implies not only
Hierarchy of Control but determination of control along with it is required. To
implement safety the first step is elimination then substitution followed by
engineering control (training). Then administrative control (signage’s/ maps etc) and
last is Personal Protective Equipment. So a worker wearing a safety helmet or jacket or
shoes -It’s the last step in hierarchy of control. This brings change in mindset of the
auditors who are auditing the system against this standard that they checking only PPE
are just not sufficient!
§ Be safe! Safety means having a safe process in place!
