3. What Are the Standards
Like a symphony, it takes a lot of people working together to develop a
standard.
ISO’s role is similar to that of a conductor, while the orchestra is made up of
independent technical experts.
ISO creates documents that provide requirements, specifications, guidelines
or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials,
products, processes and services are fit for their purpose.
So far, ISO had published 22,654 International Standards
Certification – the provision by an
independent body of written
assurance (a certificate) that the
product, service or system in question
meets specific requirements.
Accreditation – the formal recognition
by an independent body, generally
known as an accreditation body, that a
certification body operates according
to international standards.
5. International Classifications Standards ICS
The ICS (International Classification for Standards) is intended to
serve as a structure for catalogues of international, regional and
national standards and other normative documents, and as a basis
for standing-order systems for international, regional and national
standards. It may also be used for classifying standards and
normative documents in databases, libraries, etc.
The ICS should facilitate the harmonization of information and
ordering tools such as catalogues, selective lists, bibliographies, and
databases on magnetic and optical media, thus promoting the
world-wide dissemination of international, regional and national
standards and other normative documents.
