4.3.1 Environmental Aspects
Elements of an Organization’s activities, products and services that
can interact with the environment are called environmental aspects
Examples: Discharges, emissions, consumption or reuse of a material etc.
Environmental impact
Changes to the environment either adverse or beneficial, that results wholly or
partially from environmental aspects are called environmental impacts.
Examples:
Adverse - Pollution of air, Depletion of natural resources etc.
Beneficial – Improved water or soil quality etc.

Inputs for rating :
Based on history, past experience, current situation, and expected future
scenario, evaluate the possible duration for which the impact can last based
on controls defined & effectiveness of defined controls.
The provided ratings are multiplied to identify significant Rating
Rating = Scale X Severity X Frequency X Detection X Control
Define criteria for identifying the significant Aspects (may vary from
organization to organisation)
• Option 1 - Rating - Product is more than defined Limit
• Option 2 – D & C rating above 4 or highest sum of individual rating
Note - All applicable Legal & other requirement are mandatory
as per Top management commitment in EMS Policy planning for
compliance is necessary
