Abstract
This paper discusses the external affairs of Project Management Offices instead of
focusing on the internals. The article was initiated by the “AtekPC Project
Management Office” [1], Most of the obstacles to establishing a PMO are beyond the
CIO and PMO Manager’s control. There are external factors within the enterprise
that will hinder progress of a PMO implementation.
We are going to take a PMO as a black box, and focus on how the PMO/Program
Manager can manage external relations from diplomatic, marketing, public relations,
international relations, corporate culture and political perspectives. This involves
cooperation between the PMO and other entities in or outside the enterprise, to
facilitate a successfully organizational integration.
Introduction
By reading the case studies in the “AtekPC Project Management Office” [1], we see a
lot of headaches for the CIO when implementation a PMO in the enterprise.
Regardless of the technical challenges during the implementation, the core of the
problems seems to be that the PMO is lacking organization support, from the top to
the bottom. There is not enough executive stakeholder support; there is no visibility
of the program; there is a conflict of interests within departments; people are reluctant
to change the ways they have been doing things. This paper is going to provide some
high level suggestions to i.

- 4. 1. Organization Description ● Love Thy Neighbor Mexico is a non-profit organization educating American teenagers about the consequences of illicit demand of drugs coming from Mexico ● Private and Institutionally funded ● Granted 501(c)3 status by the IRS ● Online and offline awareness campaigns, namely social media and institutional education curriculum
- 6. 2. Internship Learning Objectives ● General understanding of Digital Marketing in an organization ● Management inside a non-profit as well as doing business in America ● Customer acquisition through digital channels ● Website improving according to industry best-practices ● Marketing Research
- 7. My role and functions
- 8. 3. Internship Activities ● I was given the task to prepare the workframe for selling bracelets in support of the cause ● Monitor and evaluation of social presence across different outlets ● Develop and execute a marketing campaign ● Added social widgets to the website while also fixed minor technical issues
- 9. I did it!!!

Accomplishments ● Produced a thorough report on the social activity; including a best practices approach for managing social activity ● Proposed an improved Sitemap according to industry standards ● Collaboration was limited as space constraints limited my exposure to other team members ● Prepared a final recommendation presentation for the organization

Lessons Learned ● Better understanding of the dynamics of pulling data and making decisions based on this data sets ● Hourly-based job teached me to effectively manage my time ● Non-profit culture is as hard and fast as a Startup Culture ● As obvious as this may seem, no business can thrive without a clear revenue stream or "business" plan

What Was Useful Moving Forward ● As one of my expectations is to become a digital marketing consultant with a focus on nonprofits, the whole experience was crucial for me ● Goals and expectations; both quantitative & qualitative, have to be set as clearly and early as possible ● A contingency plan should be put in place beforehand ● Taking full command, from day one of my activities, is expected
