“We are moving from an economy and
a society built on the logical, linear,
computer-like capabilities of the
Information Age to an economy and
a society build on the inventive,
empathic, big-picture capabilities of
the Conceptual Age.”
From Agriculture Age to Conceptual Age
Knowledge Workers:
Information Age
Left brain and Right Brain
Using the WHOLE MIND
High Concept
• Create artistic and
emotional beauty
• Detect patterns and
opportunities
• Craft a satisfying
narrative
• Combine seemingly
unrelated ideas into a
novel invention
High Touch
• Ability to empathize
• Understand the
subtleties of human
interaction
• Find joy in one’s self
and elicit it in others
• Pursue purpose and
meaning
Why is there an Importance of
High Concept and High Touch?
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Can someone overseas do it
cheaper?(Asia)
2. Can a computer do it faster?
(Automation)
3. Is what I’m offering in demand
in an age of abundance?
Abundance
Daniel Pink uses
the example of
buying a toilet
brush
at Target
Asia
Outsourcing
• $136 Billion in wages will
shift from US to India,
China and Russia by
2015*
• Typical chip designer in
US makes $7000 per
month compared to $1000
in India
(pg 38-39)

Not just Argument, but STORY
• How much $$ wages
will shift from US to
India, China and Russia
by 2015?
• Who are John Henry
and Garry Kasparov?
•$136 Billion
• Two people who
symbolize the struggle
of Man vs. Machine
Which of these facts was easier to remember? Why?
Because you remembered it in a STORY?
Which one do most Americans buy?

Not only Focus, but
“People who hope to
thrive in the Conceptual
Age must understand
the connections
between, diverse, and
seemingly separate,
disciplines”
(pg. 134)
Negative Space
“The guy who
invented the wheel
was an idiot. The guy
who invented the
other three, he was a
genius”

Meaning, not only accumulation
• Frankel was in a
Concentration Camp
during WWII
• Created “Logotherapy”
based on the belief:
“man’s main concern is
not to gain pleasure or
to avoid pain but rather
to see a meaning in his
life.”
Achieving Meaning - The 20-10 Test
• Would you still be doing what you do now if you had
$20 million in the bank - or –
Knew you had only 10 years to live?
$20 million – Would you spend your days the way you
spend them now?
10 years - Would you stick with your current job?
How to achieve the skills (1-3)
DESIGN
STORY
- Keep a Design Notebook with you
and make notes about GOOD
design and BAD design
- Write a Mini – saga (just 50 words,
no more, no less)
- Listen to great symphonies such as
Beethoven’s 9th
How to achieve the skills (4 – 6)

Editor's Notes

  • #3 What does this mean for our society today and for the future?
  • #4 Pink’s idea is that we progressed from a society of farmers, to Factory Workers, to Knowledge Workers and we are now progresing again to becoming Creators and Empathizers as part of the new Conceptual Age
  • #5 Figure 3.2 from pg 50 of a A Whole New Mind is a more “right brained” way of explaining this evolution to the Conceptual age. We are moving from a present day economy of Left Brained / Knowledge Workers to more Right brained Creators and Empathizers for the Conceptual Age
  • #6 The idea for the Conceptual age is to not only use the logical analytical abilities of the Left Brain but also the Creative side of the Right Brain. Using the Whole Mind.
  • #7 The Effect is a diminished importance of Left Brained or L-Directed Thinking to an increase in Right Brain R-Directed Thinking. More emphasis on High Concept/High Touch
  • #8 High Concept is the ability to create beauty, to detect patterns and opportunities, to be able to tell stories or craft a narrative and to combine unrelated ideas into inventions such as the iphone
  • #9 High Touch means to be able to empathize, understand human interactions, find joy and to pursue purpose and meaning.
  • #10 Our society is shifting from a focus on L-directed thinking to one of R-directed thinking.  Reasons: Abundance    Asia    Automation
  • #11 Pg. 34 “Only against a backdrop of abundance could so many people seek beautiful toilet brushes – converting mundane, utilitarian products into objects of desire”
  • #13 The classic story of Man vs. Machine – John Henry classic example of industrial age. Kasparov example of Knowledge age. Machine do not have the ability to conceptually think in a creative or emotional R-Directed way. Not yet…
  • #14 Pg. 65 “In the Conceptual Age we will need to complement L-Directed reasoning by mastering 6 essential R-Directed aptitudes. These six high concept, high touch sense can develop the WHOLE MIND Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning
  • #15 Design has been democratized (pg. 75) Most people could match the font with the name but 25 years ago you probably couldn’t tell.
  • #16 Everyone take out your iphone. What is the FUNCTION. What is the DESIGN? Gone from L-Directed utility to R-directed significance. Consumers spend billions on faceplates and ringtones.
  • #18 What is the difference between these shoes? Why do people buy Tom’s shoes? What’s the story behind the success?
  • #19 Symphony is the ability to put together pieces. To synthesize rather than analyze. It is not the tree but the forest, not the first violinist but the entire orchestra. Fed Ex use of the Arrow. Hersheys use of the Kiss between the K and I
  • #20 Symphony is seeing the WHOLE invention, idea or picture and how it all is combined to make it better
  • #21 “Empathy is not feeling bad for someone, it is feeling WITH someone, sensing what it would be like to be that person”.pg. 159 “Computers have tremendous mathematical abilities but when it comes to interacting with people they’re autistic” pg. 164 Spot the fake smile – this website shows a person smiling for a few seconds. Based on that brief flash, determine whether the smile is sincere or not.
  • #22 Play is becoming an important part of work, business, and personal well-being, its importance manifests itself in three ways: Games, Humor and Joyfulness
  • #23 How does playing with his patient make this doctor’s job easier?
  • #24 The sixth Whole Mind concept concerns meaning as explained by Viktor Frankel who was a psychologist who was held in a concentration camp during WWII.
  • #25 An exercise that the author heard from Jim Collins, author of From Good to Great. If you answer No to either of the questions that should tell you something.
  • #26 To review. These are the 6 high concept, high touch senses we need to develop the WHOLE MIND
